I'd be grateful for any thoughts on this.

Our new pony tries to pee just as she is due to go into the ring every time we take her to a show. When she doesn't pass anything she is resistent and not off the leg but on the two times she has managed to pass urine she has been much more forward. She doesn't do this when ridden on the flat at home.

I will call the vet tomorrow but has anytone had a similar experience or know what it could be? When she does pee she manages a normal amount and not just a dribble.

Thanks!

Is the pee normal looking, i.e not cloudy, darker or lighter than usual? Deffo give the vet a call, although very rare there is the possibility of bladder stones or bladder cancer. My friend's horse had the former last year, he started off finding it difficult to pee and then began to pass cloudy urine and small amounts of blood.

There is the possibility that's it's just stage fright if it only happens in the show ring!

My mare gets funny about weeing when she has been out of her stable/field for a long time.

She refuses to wee anywhere but in her bed (and in the field in the summer), and then when she does go for a wee she seems to strain a little.

IMO your mare is literally taking the pee or not as the case may be!!! We had a pony doing mounted games with my daughter and he would stand to pee on the start line in almost every competition when the starter was in place and the flag went up!! Never anywhere else. We also had a mare that would be cantering round a show jumping course and suddenly would stop and poo then canter on again but needless to say with a technical refusal!!

After my recent experience I would advise to get the vet in. If they do an endoscope make sure they take tissue from lots of different areas. Ultrasound didnt really tell us anything. A urine sample should tell you whether there is infection. If not it sounds like nerves.
