Hiya

We had Purdey spayed yesterday. They said that operation went well but she was taking a while to wake up and was still groggy when we picked her up at 7pm last night (operation was late morning). Vets were happy to send her home but to keep eye on her. She was shaking and nothing like her normal self but seemed better when we got her home and perked up when we gave her some chicken and a new soft toy to cuddle.

Again she seems a lot better this morning but has started doing a weird thing - she keeps walking in circles around the lounge with her new toy in her mouth. Her tail is wagging and she seems okay. She will stop for a second if you fuss her but once you stop she's off doing the circuit again. Seems like some sort of psychological thing?

Just wanted to check that it's not a sign of pain or something else and I need to do something - she is going back to vets on Saturday for check up.

Firstly, if you are in any doubts after an op, you should call your vet.

Remember, this is a big operation. Your bitch will be feeling very sore, this is probably her way of dealing with the discomfort. One of my dogs bashed into the bed and bruised her ribs, she would not lay down because it hurt, but she was so tired, that she just stood up and leaned against me until her eyes went and then she jolted herself awake again, a quick call to the vet and he recommended half an asprin as a mild painkiller, 30 minutes later with the edge off the pain, the dog laid down and fell asleep.

I am NOT telling you to give your dog apsrin, I am just trying to explain how some dogs deal with pain.

She does run in circles around the barn sometimes when playing and I did wonder if it was a slowed own version of her 'mad half hour' but she just seems so intent on doing it?

Perhaps the walking does relieve the discomfort?
She is eating/drinking/pooing/weeing normally so will see how she is when I get home later - OH is at home all day to keep an eye on her too, I will call the vets just to make sure if she still doing in tonight.

Thanks again for replies

I wouldnt have thought that this was anything to worry about, but I notice you say that you will check it with the vets just in case, which would set your mind at rest
