My mare Zara has bone spavins and has had the usual steroids, tildren etc and has recently had the ethyl alcohol treatment. Nearly three weeks after this she has not become sound and I'm meant to start working her on Thursday. I am very reluctant to work a lame horse so decided to give her some form of painkillers.
On Wednesday I took her feed down to the field where the horses are fed in little pens and have been for six years. In this feed she had Boswellia and after two mouthfuls she started wandering around the pen as if she was going to lie down. After a couple of minutes, she did lie down as if she had colic (she has only ever had colic once in her life so I was very concerned). I opened the gate to the pen and she got up and galloped out and started grazing normally! Half an hour later she was still absolutely fine.
I didn't give her any Boswellia on Thursday or Friday as I assumed she didn't like the taste hence the bizarre behaviour and she was fine, just ate up and then started eating the grass. Tonight I gave her Danilon mixed in her tea. The same thing happened only this time she started rolling around until i opened the gate and then once again she got up and galloped out and started grazing normally. The only difference in her behaviour between the two episodes is that she refused to eat the Boswellia but she ate the Danilon.
Has anyone else heard of this strange behaviour or has anyone any ideas why she behaved like this?
