I have a mare on trial at the moment, 4 y/o. At the beggining she was very forwards going with a very sensitive mouth. When I ride her but hardly touch her mouth she settles well. Shes been going really well in the school, settling nicely. Walked her out along secluded country lane for the first time today, she walked really nicely, no anxiety, no spooking. She attempted to turn her head to the left and i straightened her up and asked her to carry on and she stepped back a few steps and sat on the floor and lay down, then got up and was completly normal. I walked her on in hand and she was relaxed, tryed to get on again and she reared up.

Has anynody has any problems like this before?!

used to have a pony who would do something similar in the school as an avasion.
But I'd be getting back, teeth etc all checked out i think just to be on the safe side before you put it down to behavioural ;)

I would be speaking to the owners to see if she has done it before. I would also check back, teeth and tack although I would maybe see if the owners could go half with you.

How would you describe it when she attempted to turn her head to the left? Was it like she wanted to go that way, or had seen something, or as though she wanted to bite your leg? I absolutely do not want to alarm you, but my mare has epilepsy and in many ways you could have described a small seizure. I keep records of such cases and 99% of them start with the horse turning its head to the left. Please PM me if you want.

Or equine narcolepsy ! It is more common than you would expect there are some vids on youtube if you google it, see if the behaviour is simalar
