I have a dilemma. Twice now in 6 weeks my horse has bronced me off seconds after mounting. He has no issues being tacked up, never swishes tail, looks uncomfortable etc etc. I have had him for 6 years and he has never bucked, not even when being broken. Tack checked, teeth fine , happy to be handled and stops bucking the second I am off. He is a big horse and its a long way down! In between these outbursts he has been fine and has given absolutely no warning on either occasion. He can be tense and is a slight shiverer. Any ideas?

Even though there may be nothing obvious to cause him to buck as you know it is so out of character the vet is the first person you need to give him a proper check over, if he finds nothing and the horse is sound I would then get a good physio to look at him, he may have tweaked something that intermittently is causing him pain when first mounted/ walking on, the fact he can be a tense horse and is also a shiverer definitely suggests a minor twinge somewhere and it may be easily fixed by a couple of physio sessions.

Friends horse reacted in exactly the same way and it turned out to be a rib that had cracked.
When you say you have had your tack checked, what do you mean by this? By a qualified master saddler or have you just wiggled it about on the horses back (I don't mean this to sound rude by the way) :)

My horse bucked reared on me once and fly bucked me off. These are the only two times in eleven years he has ever wanted me off his back on purpose. Out of interest, both times were due to a badly fitting saddle.

Anything out of charachter for a horse that you know very well always flashes a red light to me.
