Hi i am desperate for any advise , my 3yr old came down with colic night befor last , he had loads of droppings (very runny) but was up and down , cast and in alot of pain , i got the vet who gave him a painkiller , antispazmodic (sp?) and he seemed fine . all day yesterday i kept him in with shavings bed , hay and water and regular walking , then exactly the same time as the previous night he came down with colic again , alot of pain , growning and major discomfort , vet out again more of the same drugs but this time antibiotics aswell , his temp etc... is all normal . he is very gassy and has got very runny droppings , but in the day he is fine even the droppings are normal in the day . I am based in france and the vets are stumped , they have been fantastic but they havent a clue whats going on with him . i will get full blood tests done on monday but in the mean time , has any one heard of anything like this befor ? i am really worried and as you can imagine i have had no sleep for the past 2 nights as i have been watching him . any info would be great
Thanks Again
Ps ... MERRY XMAS !!!!!

Certainly sounds very strange and I hope your vet can get to the cause for you.

With regard to him being o.k. during the day time and normal droppings, depending on the type of painkillers he had, it could be that the painkillers were still in his system so he was relaxed and therefore just passing droppings when they were ready to come out. By evening, the painkillers had worn off and he was pushing out droppings to try and allieviate the pain. I know when one of my horses gets either a gassy colic or an entrapment colic, he will push out several runnier droppings because of the build up of gas behind them or the entrapment.

Have your vets done a tummy tap? This might give a clue as to what is going on as well as the blood tests.

I hope your horse recovers soon.

i would walk your field and check to see if there is anything that shouldnt be in there such as ragwort or ivy or something like that. i would also try maybe troting him ect (to giggle his stomach about abit and loosen things up (only for a few mins)
also get a jam jar (empty) and do a poo test. put a sall amount of droppings in with some water and shake. look for sand and things settling straight away. if there is sand in it i would call your vet back up. if he is not drinking feed him a bran mash (more like soup) as this will hold the water and encourage him to drink more, but dont feed this every day as too much is bad for them.
i really hope he is better soon. xx and i hope i have given you a few ideas that will help you a little xx

Thanks for all the great replies , last night we had no major colic thank god , he is on antibiotics as the vet said he could have a secondary infection from the colic ?. i have 4 other horses out on the same feild and they are all fine , i have looked around the field and could find anything out the norm , he has been stabled since the first colic as the vet said it could be the frozen grass but he has been living out on the field in the snow and alsorts with just hay to chomp on so i cant see him all of a sudden having a reaction to it ?. This is the time scale of events
wednesday -farrier comes so in off the field after living out 24/7 for the last few months , farrier says his feet need to dry out so keep him in for a couple of nights , so spends wednesday in , fine no problems (he has a stable friend so hes not on his own )
thursday - turned out for a couple of hours ground was really wet as it warmed up, brought him in about 4:30pm everything normal , late night check at 9:30pm he has the runs and bad colic vet comes out gives him pain killers , he calms down and is fine
friday- no turn out as instructed , fine no problems poos are normal , not stressed untill 9:30pm then colic kicks off again exactly the same time he box walked for the same amount of time , then rolled violently at the same time , then gave up and lay there at the same time , you could set your watch to it , vet came out , gave the same drugs but also some antibiotic and gave me a small course to give him over the next couple of days
saturday - every thing fine poos normal , and no colic in the night
so i am stumped i gave him his last antibiotic this morning so i am really worried about tonight. i am going to do a poo test as suggested , and the vet did a tummy tap and said there was noise in all chambers (french vet and my french is not great)
Thanks again for all your help , if it wasnt my horse i would find it really interesting but at the moment its stressing me out xx
