Anyone have any idea what this colour would mean in my horses droppings:

My horse passed these colour droppings whilst being ridden by a friend in the school last night. It really stuck me as an odd colour particuarly as he is out from 7.30am - 3pm every day at grass and they have always been a greeny brown colour before, getting browner the less grass he has. He has lots of carrots but then has always had lots of carrots in his diet. I can't think of anything else it could be.

He hasn't had his feed changed since 11th September when he went onto a different chaff (straw based) and its never been this colour before. Does this indicate any health conditions? Surely he would have had a change of dropping before now - its been 12 days after altering his chaff.

Just never seen this colour before. No mucous surrounding it, and balls broke up on contact with the surface. The only way to describe it is a golden syrup type of colour.

ANy ideas?

You would have seen the colour change before if this was the chaff. If your colour chart is right this is quite a striking yellow! It could suggest the presence of bilirubin in the faecal matter - which is indicative of liver damage. Are his gums yellowish as well?

Another thought... could he have got into a supplement container? This also looks like Turmeric!

If this was just a once off not repeated I would chalk it up to experience. But if the colour change persists more than a few hours I would suggest a call to the vet just in case.

Sorry I did a big reply but my computer then crashed and I lost it all. Basically he did another poo last night in the school the same colour. rEally weird as I've certainly not noticed it before, the pooh in his stable were all trodden in but the odd one on the bank was a normal colour/consistency. I can't understand the sudden change. He is happy enough, energetic and looks well in himself. He's definetley not got into tumeric. Jumped him last night and he was fine to be ridden.

His gums are a nice pink colour, I noticed this last night when I put his bit in. I check his gums whenever he has colic and do a CR test and they always return to pink after a second and have always been a pink colour.

I will have to keep an eye on this.

Do you think a faecal test would indicate the presence of bilirubin and would it be worth me getting this done. Again I would be suprised if he has liver problems having always been on good grazing and had access to good hay too. But it could be a virus/bacterial liver infection or something.

Taking him XC schooling tonight so will see what he happens as he always poohs in the trailer.
