I was out walking today when man stopped me, his car was on the other side of the road (cars don't interest me so I can only say that it was red, ok).

He asked me what kind of dog the big girl is. This is not unusual, she is a bit different from the norm round here and people often ask her breed. He seemed quite pleasant. I told him she was a mastiff cross but I don't know exactly what because she was a stray. He seemed friendly and the big girl revels in human attention so I said it was okay to meet her.

He told me he had 3 dogs in the car, don't ask me what the third one was because my brain got stuck on number 2. He had a Shar Pei, an American Pit and ?.

I said "how have you got away with having a pit" and he said it was easy, just tells people, even the vet, that it is a bull dog cross.

I don't know what it says about me that he felt he could confide so freely.

I know you will tell me I was every kind of fool, that I should have taken a picture of his car, that he could wanted to steal the big girl - I don't think that was his motive tbh, I think he was just genuinely interested and I didn't feel threatened or unsafe, I was just shocked that someone could tell me they had a pit bull sitting in the car over the road, given that they are a banned breed.

I think lots of people still have pit bulls and lots of them either don’t know they are supposed to be banned or just don’t care. They are openly sold

I have nothing against the breed, Bonny. I am sure they make lovely pets in the right hands.

I have had bad experiences when dogs have attacked mine and the attacking dogs weren't prohibited breeds.

I was just staggered that someone would tell a complete stranger that they had a banned breed sitting in their car.

ETA I have never seen any pit bulls "openly sold".

People tell me random things all the time - the woman on the bus who chatted about her son's schizophrenic break and suicide attempts, the steward at Olympia who told me and my friend about his upcoming birthday, wedding anniversary and cancer free anniversary are two examples that spring to mind. These are always literally people I've never met before and I make no attempt to engage in conversation. This even happens if I have a book or headphones in. That sort of conversation would not surprise me in the least - I've no idea why people do that but it is just normal to me these days. I have a face that inspires over share

PS - mind you I’m as bad, I tell everyone that Amy and Millie are lurchers because it sounds cool ? I have absolutely no idea what they are really, so strictly speaking they are mongrels ?

Have a look on gumtree !

Lol! Thats happened to me too. Im quite stunned initially by the overshare, then i wonder to myself if the person has anyone in their life to talk to...if not, then theyll lack that outlet, and will be more open with strangers i guess.

Once on a flight to the usa, a man insisted on telling me his life story....8 hours of yankeedoodle...i was exhausted at the other end and glad for peace and quiet!

My friend said that about the man at Olympia PurBee, but it happens literally everywhere to me, I can't believe there are that man friendless lonely people in the world - not when most of them are basically pleasant. It's funny, I don't initiate conversation in those circumstances at all and yet it happens so often to me I think it's normal. It only really made me stop and think when my friend commented and I was like oh no this is my every day lol
It's not great in a "trapped" situation I must admit and I'm quite introverted so I find socialising quite exhausting at the best of times - I must just hide it well! I know there are folk who like to just hold forth and talk at you as well, your American sounds like one of them!

A lot of people wouldn't know a pit bull if it jumped up and bit them on the butt. And I saw this as someone where they are very common and aren't banned. I've had people tell me that they have pits at home and then ask me if my GSDs are pits. Most people ask me if the GSDs are Belgians/Malinois, not pits.

Also worth noting that if a pit bull has been temperament tested, ear tattooed, licenced and is muzzled in public, you can keep them.

I suspect that if his dog was licensed that he would not be passing if off as a bull dog cross.

I didn't actually see the dog, I felt no inclination to go and peer in his car.

It was probably a staffy cross really!

I get folk telling me all sorts, too. I must just have a patient face.

It's a 'pit type' that's illegal so perhaps although in his mind it's a pit, it doesn't actually fit the stereotype and features that would mean it would be classed as a pit bull type?

Or it just hasn't been picked up on yet... they rely on people informing the Police, seeing them out and about, them being involved in incidents etc, but even then like Staarzan says if they can prove the dog is not a danger and are willing to conform to certain conditions (they must also be neutered) the dog is not automatically put down.
