Hi my old horse has been living out in day in at night all summer since the beginning of august he has had a rug on at night (now into MW) he is never hot in the stable. For some of august and most of september he had either a LW with/without neck depending on if raining and some days he had his MW without neck on. Now this last week i have been away YO looked after him(he is fine) but he has been getting hot when only having his LW on without a neck eventho it is much colder now than it was.
He has never done this before but i dont want him getting sweaty then cold and he is always rugged in winter so its a bit worrying!! Is he cold so trying to get warm and then sweating...he doesnt run in field so i doubt it that. It doesnt just happen on sunny days either it can be on overcast days like today, i didnt believe her when she told me he had got hot but today i saw it, it is more of a 'clammyness' on his neck/shoulders where the rug ends, it may just be rubbing i guess causing heat?
Any other ideas what it could be?
Sorry its long....hot chocolate and marshmellows for those who have gotten this far!

If he has started to get his winter coat through and isn't clipped then he may well be too hot. Bar the occational day it is still very mild here and can be a little muggy some days too. Before ours were clipped they were too hot even with no rugs! Unless there is a reason to be sweating such as the onset of colic then I would have thought that he is just too hot.

I doubt very much that he is sweating because he is cold and 'trying to warm up' It sounds like he is too hot. If there's not much wind and no rain then maybe he would be happier without a rug? My boy has only had his on for a week or two because of the wind and rain. Otherwise he does get very hot and bothered. Try him without a rug if it's dry? I would rather a horse a bit cold than a bit hot.

Thanks, well he has got it ontoday due to the rain, but my mum said she has looked at his rug this morning when she out out and thinks it maybe his rug is rubbing his shoulders/neck when he moves as he is never hot anywhere else and actually feels cold underneath the actual rug if you pop your hand underneath. So i think that is the problem, but thanks for the ideas it is only 7 degrees here today and set to be colder as week goes on so think he will have to be in one now, he is going to be clipped at weekend though x
