Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar and can shed any light?! I realise that it is pretty much guess work and you don’t have much to go on, but…

I had a lesson on Wednesday, everything was going really well, no lameness etc, then when we’d finished my instructor said “has he always had that lump”…

Ok, so I jump off, and my lad has a lump approx the size of my palm and about an inch thick on his nearside hind quarter. I didn’t notice it when I was grooming (we were in a rush) so could have missed it, although unlikely.

The lump is not absolutely solid, but is fairly hard, but also kind of squishy?! While the physio was at our yard yesterday I got her to have a quick look in case it was muscle damage and she said it definitely wasn’t muscle but she didn’t have a clue?! She said that if it hadn’t gone down in a few days to get the vet out.

So, has anyone else’s horse had a similar injury/sting/kick/bite reaction??

He’s not lame and has no other marks around the area, just the lump!

Sorry there’s not much to go on and no photo's, but thanks to all for any help or suggestions!!! :)

potentially a fatty deposit? Would find this unlikely unless pony is getting quite old/over weight as it can be a symptom of cushing :/

Otherwise though I'd say maybe a reaction to some sort of insect bite? If its not gone down i'd get the vet though.

Without seeing it its hard to say but from your description it sounds like a bite reaction, does he live out? Maybe he lay on something, we had a pony with similar symptoms and vet said could possibly be a snake bite.

Hiya!

Thanks for your replies. He's only 7 and is in pretty good shape, and not overwieght, he has gained a few pounds over summer :o but nothing major, just good covering. I'll keep an eye on weight though, just in case!

He's not out at night, but is out all day. He was lying down on Tuesday evening when I went to bring him in, and he does nap in the afternoon's (such a hard life ;)). We do tend to get the odd frog in our field, so wouldn't count out snakes
