Hi All,
Jasper has some lumps on the left side of his neck:

They are vertical lumps, and in some places scabs under the hair. The scabs are stating to come off in places, the scab is yellow and it leaves pink skin underneath.
Does anyone have any idea what it might be?
I have bathed them in diluted Hibiscrub, and put Wondergel on them for now.
They don't seem to be bothering him, but I'm worried and no one else on the yard has seen anything like it before!
Thanks in advance. x

Thanks for your reply Mabel98, I have decided that they are fly bits and he has had a reaction to them. They seemed a lot better today after the bathing and Wondergel, so have done more of the same today.

That's good, my mare keeps coming up in funny lumps and bumps too as the flies have got really bad recently.

My horse had something along these lines last year. It was a reaction to fly bites - she needed sterroid injections to get rid of them....xx

one of mine had this,i thought it was where we had a patch of hogweed that was fenced off and he got in there and sat in it (????) but i`m not sure.the sap from hogweed can burn and make them sensitive to the sun.
i smarmed it with pig-oil and sulphur and now it is nearly gone.
hogweed looks like cow parsley but has different stems and is later in the year.

i`m still not entirely sure but this is what i think.

Don't worry - both of our mares have lots of lumps and bumps over their necks and backs we think they're fly bites - they seem to be very aggressive this year! :(

looks like sunburn (or photosensitisation) to me particularly as it is more on his white areas. he may have been photosensitised in some way, eating st johns worst etc can do it. or it can be indicative of a problem with the liver, allowing chemicals to get to the skins surface that wouldnt normally be there making it sensitive to the light. For this reason it would be wise to have a chat to your vet and get a liver test done to make sure all is ok. A friends coloured had photosensitisation and it had spread a bit far before she acted meaning it took a lot longer to resolve :).

Just as an update, the scabs are coming off (must NOT pick, but oh-so-tempting!!) and the lumps have gone right down so it seems to be getting better. Fingers crossed it carries on that way!
Thank you all for your replies, it really helps a first-time horse owner like me to be able to pick your very knowledgable brains!
Choccy all round! xXx

cahill I cant remember specifically in his case but I do know it was a pretty long time! afaik treatment is normally application of topical antiseptics, antibiotics if bad enough, removal from the sun, and checking of diet. Having done a little more reading apparently alfalfa (not sure in which form!) and perhaps more importantly clover are also implicated.

This looks just like photosensitisation to me, as others have said the fact only the white bits are affected give the game away. It is something you should be taking very seriously as it is a cardinal sign of liver disease. If I were you I would be having the vet out ASAP to blood test for liver disease regardless of whether they are improving or not. I have debated whether or not to tell you this but due to the relaxed nature of other peoples posts I think you should know I had to put a horse to sleep with end stage liver failure with no other aparent symptoms than sun burn like this and dullness. I hope this is not the case for your horse but please get it seen by your vet.
