Hi there,

My horse has just moved to a field near a canal and we have a major problem with bugs!

He has small-ish lumps all over his body caused by tiny yellow tick-like insects, almost invisible, which looks like eggs but which have tick-like legs at the head. They are easy to remove, and seem to drop off after a couple of days leaving a small weeping scab. Does anyone know what these may be?

They may or may not be related to another parasite which is causing them to have scabs around their fetlocks and coronets - very much like mud-fever. When walking through the filed in sandals the other day I noticed tiny black mites on my feet from the grass which I suspect are responsible. Does anyone also know what these are, and what I could use to repel them?

Our fields are hay fields and the grass is rich, and although not too long, it is not short either. It borders a canal and we get an awful lot of flies.

Any ideas gratefully received.....

Hi there Thinlizzy,

Am awaiting a call back from my vet - unlikely he'll recommend a call out though - he has about 10 lumps at any one time and all the horses seem to have them, and they don't seem to be causing a problem, really. I could post a picture but they are so minute I don't think you would be able to see anything!

Just wondered if anyone has had them before....?

Sounds like lice -there are two types and your vet should be able to tell you about treatments.

All the horses need treating.
