My horse has discovered an extremely fun game of grabbing hold of the back of my friends horse's rug and trying to pull him around!!!! I've seen him taking hold of the tail flap of the rug and pulling as hard as he can and he rocks the other horse backwards and forwards!!!! Luckily they are the best of friends so no kicking has been involved.

Anyway my friends rug has been completely trashed at the back, he has managed to rip a huge hole above where the tail flap joins and is now grabbing Bertie's tail through the hole pulling chucks of tail out!! Little monkey!

We are going halves on a new heavy weight turn out rug and we wondered if there was anything we can put on the back of this new rug that maybe tastes horrible that will stop mine from doing this.

Any ideas would be much appreciated please.

Thanks x

Liquid cribox. Curry paste. Washing up liquid. Mustard.

Yep.

My horse has just started doing this with his mate - and I'm just waiting to be presented with a bill

Been there (on the receiving end) and know how it feels.
Tried Stop bite, crib box, Mustard mixed with water and sprayed on rug (worked the best) and eventually bit the bullet and forked out for a Rambo Wug. Was mortified at the time spending so much but as I was going through rugs about every 2 weeks, I needed something much stronger.
The rug is still going now, years on. The lining did rip a bit but the outer is in one piece.
Dont bother with the lower denier rugs. The Rambo is Ballistic Nylon and really does last.

He he this is our 4 year old's favourite game, grabbing and just holding (sucking) other horses rugs! Luckily he doesn't seem to do it with the intent of tearing, I had just him and my other two turned out together the other weekend for 2 days and he just spent the whole time following my mare around and mouthing on her rug! But didn't tear it thankfully. But he is going through a mouthing stage generally - absolutely anything will go in his mouth at the moment!

I had to replace all my rugs myself, owner of other horse said 'horses will be horses' and I suppose thats true. There was nothing we could do to stop it happening apart from seperate them, which we eventually had to when the playing went too far one day and my horse got a fractured leg.

my TB does this to the shetland, literally swings him round by his rugs! NAF no bite is the only thing that has stopped him, but be sure to stand up wind when spraying as you REALLY dont want that on you, it is VILE!!!!!!!!

Glad I'm not the only one who has a mischievous horse!

I felt really bad, and i even tried to sew it up, but my boy just ripped it all again the next day.

Lets hope something works x

Throw a snowball at it.

Just kidding. Sorry to highjack, but can you use NAF no bite on tails? the little shite yearling in b's field has chewed a chunk out of his tail. he's going to look a pleb at the spring shows

Lol it is comical watching them, as soon as his play mate goes out, mine is straight on his rug trying to drag him around. They've also now started biting each others faces too - nothing bad tho. The funniest bit is they are chunky 15.2 horses and the 11hh pony just stands and looks at them as if to say 'stupid idiots!' Wouldn't change them for the world tho.

I'm currently experiencing this, lots of tail flaps ripped off rugs and many nights sewing them back together. And now to top it off, they've eaten the top of his tail completely and I'm intending to show his this Spring, so not happy!

I know they're just playing, but I've now put cribox on his rug this morning, hoping that will be a good start. Getting some NAF crib stop spray too, which I intend to use on his tail and mane. I'll let you know if it makes a difference

My 5yo does this, but instead of hanging onto his fieldmates rug, he grabs hold of his own (at the front) and pulls it. his rugs are now all shreaded at the front. I've tried cribbox and mustard, but neither work!

My horse started to do this last winter, he was bored as no grass in field and YO refuses to put out hay as it 'makes a mess'!!! tried no bite etc but no good he just chose another part of the rug to hang onto and rip. He was just playing but I ended up having to fork out for another rug for the other horse (not mine)

I ended up getting a muzzle for him, it's a greenguard one with the headcollar, an expensive way to do it but so far it's worked, he broke the bottom strap behind his jaw and has worked out that he can eat what little grass there is by moving the muzzle up his nose but can't chew the rugs!

He doesn't need to lose weight but has kept his condition last winter and this, soon as grass is through and rugs start to come off he has his muzzle off as others are starting to put them on!!

Tell me if you think I'm being stupid but we've got some left over wormer we could smother the back of the rug, which I know my boy hates - or are there bad implications to doing this? x

Problem with this is with all the mud and rain you need to reapply almost daily, depending on the weather so although the wormer may work, then I cant see it lasting long.
