I'm baffled...

My 4yo has always had random lumps, he arrived with them when I bought him in May.

They tend to come and go and definitely seemed worse with flies.

Although many of them have gone since the flies have gone, he is left with about 7 fairly large bumps, around the size of a little finger nail. Most of these have now developed scabs..

He has about 3 in the saddle area. Today I decided to pick one of the scabs off...it started to loosen but wouldn't come off, so we got a torch so that we could really see it properly. It looked like the scab had a root! It didn't look like it was being held on around the edge by a final bit if skin, it just didn't want to come off and really looked as though is had a root in the centre of the scab and you could see a clear hole that it was coming out of....

When I noticed this, I left it alone.

Anyone have any idea what this can be? Clearly I left the others alone too!

They don't bother him in the slightest, even when I was pulling the scab, he wasn't bothered...

Thanks if you can help!

:)

Warble fly? Bit late in the season - are you sure it was a root and not a maggot?

I did wonder that, but the root thing it too thin, about the width of the wire to headphones, if you know what I mean, also! the horse is comfortable! doesn't. Bother him at all...and aren't warble's meant to b v. Painful....
I wonder if it's protein lumps.....
The hair is still on, so I don't think sarcoids...

I reckon you're right, just googled it...I think I'll give his back a good clean with antibacterial after I ride, it is under the saddle so would make sense...I do clean the saddle cloths regularly, maybe he's just the sensitive type!

The Moose gets these, amongst his other lumps and bumps. His are reactions to something biting him, probably horse flies. They take forever to go, but don't seem to be infected and aren't partictlarly painful to him. The 'root' is just connected in the middle of the bite.

Magic moose is right, I've had a mare with these in the past, they do eventually go. We also have a gelding at the yard at the moment who developed them, his owner was cleaning them daily, but they have improved dramatically since he has been clipped and she can get right to the skin, she swears by using hypo care on them

It wouldn't be a warble as they have been eradicated from the UK for some time. It could be a collagen lump, maybe the surface has become a bit sore and the body is rejecting the dead tissue.

How did you get on with the Hypocare on your lad's face Queenbee, did you buy some in the end? My mare's cut on her leg has nearly healed without leaving much of a scar at all!

No I didn't use hypocare in the end, we used steroid cream after a chat with the vet. Although to be fair over time I've tried many things, hibiscrub, salt, antibacterial gel, spray plasters, sudocreme and steroid cream. he got to the stage where he was just knocking it everyday, and the vets reckon that it was a bot sore, but that it was slow to heal, then something in that grazing triggered a flare up in his muzzle in general (he even developed sunburn which he didn't get all summer) this aggravated the area and caused it to swell, after that it has been a bit of a nightmare, and as he knocked it more and more it's started to over granulate, we were right on the edge of booking in an emergency to debride as no topical treatment was helping it when I started to feed on the floor after having noticed that he was even starting to catch it on his hay hutch, he knocked it for a couple of days but since then it has healed and been good for the best part of a week. We will still be looking at the possibility of debridement but for now, we are watching this space, if it continues to heal as it is now, then it's very very positive, if he knocks it anymore we will take action the same week, but at the moment I'm so chuffed as its been the longest time in the last six weeks that he hasn't knocked it.
