My horse has just come home to join me after being on loan for 12 months while I moved to the other side of the country.
When I gave her a good check over, I noticed a large patch of red raw skin on the inside of the top of her leg/bum under her tail, that obviously hasn't been treated. It almost looks as if her bum cheeks have been rubbing together!
I'm treating it now and I'll give it a couple of days and call the vet if there's no sign of improvement... but does anyone have any clue what may have caused this, or what it might be?!
Obviously I'm not getting much response from the person who had her on loan...

TS, it could be something as simple as the horse getting sweaty and not being washed properly after riding. 2 skin surfaces that are already sweaty, dirty and rubbing together can cause a dermatitis. You'll need to clean the area very gently with warm water with a glug of Hibiscrub in. Very, very gently. Then rinse carefully and apply a good quality healing cream such as Sudocreme, or even a baby's bottom product like Bepanthen. I'd keep the riding to gentle so she doesn't get too sweaty til it's cleared up and maybe bring her clipping forward a week or so to make sure she doesn't get too sweaty. Good luck and I'm glad she's back home with you again!

I agree - when I was reading your post I was going to suggest Sudocreme. If it wasn't there before the horse was loaned, it must be something temporary. Hope its better soon.

Thanks for the advice... I washed it yesterday with hibiscrub, but the instructions said to leave it to dry so I didn't put anything else on it afterwards... I will try applying a nappy cream and see how we go from there!

Thanks again :)

If it's right in under her tail it could be pinworms (which live in the anus and cause itching) so the raw skin would be where she has rubbed it. A good dose of wormer would fix it if it was pin worms (as well as keeping the area clean). Was she on a proper worming regieme whilst she was leased?

I agree with the other comments about it been a sweat rash - Bepanthen cream is fantastic for this!

The other thing could be if she is in season and squirting that gunky stuff they do. A horse at the place where I graze had terrible raw skin in between her back legs from the in season stuff dripping down there are causing irritation

I have a fine coated mare that is susceptable to this. Its due to sweat or squirting when in season. She gets washed off with plain water or with a bit of salt added and dried off gently with a towel before applying Sudocreme. This is soothing and sorts the problem, particularly if treated promptly.

Sounds like something we get with our pony from time to time - it's a sweat rash thing.

I wipe it clean for him and then slather on the Sudocreme - usually sorts it out in a few days at most.

If it smelly or discharging then you need to get the vet.

It's completely healed now, in less than a week you can't tell there was ever a problem... which just goes to show if the person who had her on loan had done something as simple as wash it and apply a dab of nappy cream it would never have got so bad ! Grrr!
