Strange Sweaty Patch on Quarters

Can anyone explain this strange sweaty patch on this horse's quarters. It only happens either during work, or as in this photo, when she has been traveling in the horse box with a rug and got a bit sweaty. It sweats the whole of the patch you can see and then drips down the back leg. The horse is not lame in any way and is in full work as a showjumper

Any ideas, could it be nerve damage ?????

Nerve damage of some sort is what I was going to say......

Has she ever had a nasty bang or fall that you know of??
 
We have had her for a year, she is now a 4 year old, to be honest we have not noticed it until she was backed about 4 months ago. She has not had any fall or bang since she has been with us, but I have no idea if she did in the past. She came over from Holland. You can only see it when she sweats. any other time it is not noticeable ????
 
Yes agree with AmyMay, my horse had a kick on his quarters back in february and although it didn't break the skin I had to get the vet out a month or so later because the area was very hot and then a boil appeared on it and burst so obviously an infection in there. the vet gave him some antibiotics which cleared up the infection, but if he is rugged overnight he still gets sweaty in that area.
 
My mare fractured her pelvis as a 5 year old and got a sweat patch like you describe at the site of the injury. The vet said nerve damage and I didnt worry about it again was fine never caused any probs and she went on to SJ to grade B before being PTS last year because of a totally unrelated injury.:(
 
The only similar experience I have had of this is with one of my old rescues. When the chiropractor came to work on him, she found a spot just above his loins which was very painful at first. After a while he began to relax and the particular area began to seep with oil. The chiro had never experienced this in all her years around horses. The oily patch got bigger as she worked on it and it sweated for a few days before disappearing altogether.

Not much help though, sorry. Hope you get to the bottom of it.
 
thats very interesting. my mare has a very small( about thunb nail size) sweaty/oily patch on the muscle above her elbow. started a few weeks ago. I've never seen anything like it before.
 
My TB fell over in 2005 and sustained a huge heamatoma on his left quarter and for at least a year after that, you could see a visible sweat patch within the area of the injury .... I used to refer to it as his 'sweaty patch'. However after a couple of years it disappeared

Odd sweat patches can sometimes be caused by stress. That is mental stress, not physical.

A friend's mare had a similar patch on one shoulder, which gradually reduced as she spent more time under saddle. It was a useful indicator that the mare was starting to blow up!

Obviously rule out physical causes first, but then look at ways of relaxing her mentally and see if that helps to reduce the problem.

She's a lovely girl by the way!
 
My mare had a similar thing on one of her shoulders. It was slightly lighter than the rest of her coat for the majority of the time, but it would sweat up easily, even when she sweated nowhere else.

There was also a horse at the yard recently with a similar patch which behaved in the same way. All a bit weird, but didn't seem any bother. I would be intregued to find out exactly what they are though.
 
I have exactly the same on my new are. She is under full scrutiny of two physios who conclude she MUST have had a ball fall, flipped up or damaged her pelvis previously.
 
I had a gelding with this last year, it was most obvious in warm weather and from what I could gather he had sustained an injury to his knee as a youngster and also had a shortened tendon but yes I believe it is nerve damage although I never quite got to the bottom of it before he was sold.
 
My girly's got one on her neck, it only comes up if she's hot or worried and yes it weeps sweat. The coat has become a bit lighter because of it, but I can only think that something happened as a foal. There's no sign of any damage, and it doesn't bother her, just looks a bit odd!!
 
My horse gets a sweaty patch at the base of his neck sometimes for no real reason and he isn't sweating anywhere else. It doesn't cause him any problems but the funny thing is my previous horse had a patch like that in the same position. I had never seen it before on any other horse - maybe it's just me and the way I ride?!
