Hi all, thanks for taking the time to read this.

So my new(ish) gelding has recently had swelling of the lymph nodes between his cheeks underneath his jaw. I only noticed this today however it does seem painful to touch. It is quite hard so not fluid filled. He doesn't have any strangles symptoms apart from this one bit of swelling - no running nose, tiredness, loss of appetite etc.
He also coughs when you start working him in trot but this soon stops as soon as its out his system.

If it is not gone in a few days I will be getting the vet out but dont want to jump the gun if its nothing serious!

Him and a few others had recently gone out onto some pretty rich pasture that was rested for a while (but is now all eaten away) which i had presumed was the cause of his slightly runny poos! But now beginning to wonder if all of this is related...

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on this? Any help is appreciated.

have any of the others got the same swelling......if not I would call the vet sooner rather than later, he could have an infected tooth or as you mentioned strangles could be the reason...

A friend of mine has had exactly the same swelling that you describe this past ten days with her horse. She had it tested and then when all came back negative, got the dentist out to check - nothing. She has been told to carry on and assume it's grass related... - hope that helps to some degree!

Might be 'grass mumps'... Completely harmless mild allergic reaction to a particular type of grass/plant at a particular time of the year. Can't rem the ins & outs, so maybe google 'grass mumps' or 'grass glands' for more info. One of mine gets this now & then. It can be a bit alarming the first time you see it.

My horse has an enlarged gland in the area you describe. He's had it for as long as I can remember. Vet advised that as long as it doesn't get bigger or cause him any problems to just leave it be.
