My horse had a bout of spasmodic colic last Thursday and since then her wee has been a bit strange.

It is very dark, almost looks like it has a red tint and smells strongly. She also seems to be having problems actually weeing sometimes, she goes to wee but then only a tiny bit will come out. Other times she wees normally.

The vet came today to review her current lameness issue and while he was there I mentioned it and he said to get a sample. I have got one and it is very cloudy and dark yellow/orange. There is also what looks like a lot of sediment at the bottom of the pot. Smells terrible too.

Also, i took the actual sample by catching her wee in a sterilised bucket (sample pot is tiny!) and there is what looks like a thick sticky coating of sediment over the entire bucket.

Obviously I think there is something wrong but just wondered if anyone had any ideas? Could it be a simple urine infection or something else? I think it's strange that it started after the colic...

Could she be coming into season....sometimes that can be a link to colic in mares. It may be that the stickiness is actually vaginal discharge mixing with urine. Horses wee can be a lot darker than human wee so I wouldnt be too worried about the colour unless its obviously bloody.

Hopefully the vets will be able to put your mind at rest.

Did you take the sample from 'midstream'? I think that you are supposed to take from the middle of the wee and not the beginning or end - it might be worth checking with your vet.

No, not coming into season. That was the vets first thought too.

Been going on for a week now with no sign of improvement, initially thought it would just go away by itself but it doesn't seem to be the case.

Oooh, well hopefully they can get the sample tested quickly and work out whats going on.

Apart from the wee is she happy in herself now the colic has passed?

Most likely a bit of infection which can be cured with antibiotics. Hope it's nothing serious.

It's hard to tell really because she is on box rest for a collateral ligament injury and she hates being in so is pretty pissed off at the best of times!

She does look mildly uncomfortable at times, but it always passes without developing into colic or anything. Definately appears to strain when weeing sometimes though.

I was always told that the darker it is, it means they are a bit dehydrated and that the sediment is ok ish .... but I also understand that straining to wee can be a sign of being a bit colicy .... but I guess your Vet would have suggestions on this
