Hi, My Mare Tested Positive For Strangles On The 18th Of October I Went Through Every Treatment Via Vet To Make Her Well Again, She Stopped All Form Of Antibiotics And Bute Into The First Week Or So In November, I Then Had Her Re Tested The Last Week Of November And All Results Came Back Negative So She Had The All Clear :)

Of A Evening My Mother Will Put Her To Bed For The Night In Her Stable, She Has Been Fine Until Saturday Morning I Gave Her A Fresh Haynet From A New Bale Of Hay Whilst I Mucked Out Her Stable, I Then tacked Her Up To Ride To Notice A Very Swollen Throat Were Abbsesis Would Form If It Was To Be Strangles, She Has Been Isolated Since Saturday Morning The Swelling Has Reduced But Not Massively, I Have The vet Coming Out Today.

Has Anyone Else Had A Similar Thing Happen Once There Horse Has Been Given The Clear

Hi mitto0121 so sorry to hear about your mare. I'll be interested in hearing any responses to your thread as I was wondering whether Strangles can attack the same horse twice or if it's like Chicken Pox in humans and they can build antibodies to it. I'd suggest looking up MrsD123 on here as she seems to know a lot about strangles. But obviously your vet will be the best port of call on this kind of thing.

I have a mare that tested negative but clearly still has active strangles. Vet suggested antibiotics can give false negative. They said they need to be off antibiotics at least a week.

She had been off antibiotics 4 weeks before being re tested and she was tested with the guttural pouch swab test

She had the guttural pouch test and was off antibiotics for 4weeks had vet out this evening again and has taken swobs from the pus in absesis it may or may not be strangles again but can't rule it out
