Was thinking today bout how strangles is not a notifiable disease ect. Was wondering what peoples views would be of pulling a alert website together for the uk so that people could post on the site under different counties if their horses had or knew of horses who had strangles. Have this evening pulled together a basic idea of a site but wanted to know peoples thoughts first.

In principle its a good idea but in reality it'd be a nightmare - think how many rumours and lies go about, it'd be awful (and probably open to all sorts of legal problems!).

Was thinking along the line of having people post but not give out a specific location. So for example stating the village the yard was in but not the yard name or the names of any people involved.

I'm just not sure it'd work. Because nobody would be happy enough with the area, it needs to be specific, and seemingly so many yards think its acceptable to lie about strangles, so it wouldn't be accurate.

Also, I'm not sure how it'd make money (if this is a business idea!), and there are so many local facebook groups now, most of it goes on there anyway. xx

Have to say I think anyone running such a site would be leaving themselves wide open to legal action should somebody be a little over enthusiastic about reporting cases. Logistically how would you even be able to tell which information was accurate or not?

What about of it was done so only the yard owner, horses owner or vet could report a case?
I think we need to get rid of the stigma attached to strangles And get it to the point where people feel able to inform people that they have been affected by strangles

I think the equine rumour mill does a pretty good job of keeping people informed. Tbh, I treat all horses out hacking and at shows like they have a disease, strictly no contact, no grazing, no using communal water troughs.

I do think that would be a good idea if you could also just make it worth your while. I wonder with no evidence, just logic, if strangles would diminish if we could have more honest reporting.

Yes by in my recent experience the YO/YM are the ones desperate to lie through their teeth. The vets cannot comment on snything more than 'there is strangles in the area' due to confidentiality, and therefore the only reliable info that comes out is liveries stabled there or the odd person working there who hasn't been sufficiently blackmailed.

Sorry!
