Strangles and Jumping out of the Stable

I've recently brought a 4 year old coloured cob called Dave. I've never owned my own horse before but had a few shares and after being let down by the owner I decided to buy Dave from a dealer. I've moved him onto a wonderful yard with my friend. But unfortunately one of the horses have Strangles. I feel dirty all the time but I'm disinfecting everything from my buckets to my wheel barow. The infected horse has been isolated - it was always isolated and kept away from the other horses but I'm worried what if I walk where the infected horse's owner walks and then infects my horse? Also I brought a Dave as cobs are easy they dont need much feeding and are bombproof. The first day he broke out of the paddock through the electric fencing. He likes to walk all over me but is getting better for his Mummy. One morning he jumped out of his stable and headed for the infected horse so any ideas on how to keep him in his stable? He also trashes his bed and tips his water everywhere. Along with the bargyness I was wondering why he does this?

Can anyone help me along with the strangles problem I'm worried I'm going to get ill and my puppy dog. Also the jumping out of the stable something to lock him in but what?
Sorry this is a bit long but please someone help me. Oh and any suggestions need to be cheep as I've found out that a horse isn't going to help me keep my fake nails.

well done for keeping him separate from the sick horse and also good that the sick horse is in isolation

however if your horse can jump out over the stable door it is dangerous - it sounds as if the door is not high enough

you could buy a full grill or an anti-weave grill (see Robinsons or other on-line suppliers for these) and they are a doddle to fit - 8 scres to fix the holders and then drop in the grill

tipping water over - put the bucket in some old tyres

trashing bed - get rid of the bed and put rubber mats in his stable - save you a fortune on bedding and means mucking out taks 10 mins instead of 40

if he has a rug on electric fencing may not work - take off the rug and make sure that the leccy is running off a mains charger - battery chargers aren't that good for your sort of horse

bargyness just means willpower and body language - not hitting or yanking - just 'personality' that you are top dog, he WILL do as he's told and he will get over out of your 'space'

you should be in quarantine due to the horse with strangles for about 2 to 3 months so no hacking off the yard whatsoever

Thank you for your reply
The door is like a normal stable door . My YM suggested putting the water in a tyre, I did and he still got it out. Then I put a brick in the bottom and still he tipped it over. I brought a bucket to hang on the wall - the shop said it was indestructable (sp) and the first night he trashed it. I've got rubber matting but end up taking nearly a bale out a day as its all sopping. The electric is through the mains knocked my YM's husband on his back the other day. I thought cobs didn't need rugs? I so didn't budget for that!

get a grill for the door as I've described but an anti-weave grill

then get a manger than hangs on the door - hand it on the outside of the door where his head will go thru the V of the grill

put the water in the manger and if he tips it out it will go on the yard and not on the bed

if you have rubber mats then why are you using bedding - all he needs is a bucket of shavings where he wees - other than that use a hose and some shampoo - cheaper than bales of bedding and easier than mucking out

sounds like your horse needs to learn some manners plus he needs to have something to play with

if you have rubber mats without much bedding then you can get him a horse ball which you put treats in and he rolls round the floor to get the treats

you can also get hima horse jolly ball - i.e. football with handle - to play with

you can hang swedes or turnips on strings for him to knaw and play with

also if he breaks out of fields and you cannot turnout with permanent unbreakable fencing then try looseschooling him in the arena if you have one to give him some 'playtime'

Isnt it a bit crewl to not let him have much bedding don't they get snapped hocks or something?

Thank you ever so much for the reply again. I'll try to do something but with my regular beauty appointments and a unemployed partner to entertain I think I can set asside two nights a week to let him wonder in the school.

i own a cob and i dont have stables but when he goes in my friends stables (if i stop for a coffe on the way home!!) he trashes it, i think its because he's not used to it and he also can get a bit sweaty and stressy which is unlike him!! so was he stabled before you had him??

If you are that uncertain about the horse then perhaps you ought to get some local professional advice rather than posting on here

You're regular beauty appts sound very important to you. Couldn't you take the cob along with you to relieve his boredom on the days he cannot play in the school ?

Im sorry but is this a joke???

1) Strangles is a Equine disease and is not carried to human, dog, cat etc etc Having been through the disease with my own horse and nearly loosing him to the B*stard Strangles strain of the disease i find your post a complete P*ss take.

2) Assuming a cob is clean and bombproof is pathetic!

3) hocks do not snap!!!

There are so much more i could pick out but to be honest i cant be bothered to play your game.

Personally i find all your posts a joke

Hmmm... school hols again

Hmm was wondering why no-one had queried it till I read the last few posts on thread! The snapped (capped) hocks finally convinced me this is someone who knows about horses doing a reasonably clever wind up!

I'm sorry guys it was a prank but I'm afraid to confirm that there is a such lady who is this thick and nieve. Thank fully she's left and will not be welcome back.

Just to put the story straight I produced my own youngster and know how to handle cobs which is more than she can do. I just feel sorry for the poor horse she has.

This was done as a joke to amuse some of the posters on here.
