strangles at riding school in crewe/nantwich (cheshire) *advice*

I currently have lessons at a riding school in the crewe/nantwich area of cheshire. I know they have a case of strangles on the yard. Im just after some advice really. I am a mum returning to riding hence why im having lessons. my children however share a friends pony who is on a different yard. Will I be able to continue riding at the riding school or is the risk to my friends pony to great? does the disease really spread that quickly? please advise

I did the weekend nursing of a case on my RS and the yard closed to hacking but carried on with the lessons (indoor arena only) perfectly successfully. We had no other cases and were at a loss to know how this case arose as the horse never left the property. We can only guess a customer who had been on another infected yard brought it. So biosecurity is essential and would strongly advise that everyone uses completely different clothes on each yard. Snot can get onto clothes very easily and be carried to another yard.

Strangles does spread very easily, it lives on you as well as your clothes/shoes/car tyres/fences/water buckets etc if they have come into contact with a diseased horse or mucus etc.

I personally wouldn't want to risk bringing it back to another horse or pony so if it were me I would put a pause on lessons in until the yard has the all clear. I'm sure some will give me grief for not backing up a business when they hit a problem like this, but I'm afraid the health of any horse or pony I would then come into contact with would have to be the priority. You could stick with lessons there but be very careful to change clothes and shoes between yards as well as antibac gel on your hands - this would minimise any risk, as well as obv not share horse equipment between the two yards.

There are some great info sheets online if you want to read up on it, go for a vet written one though so it is factual rather than scaremongery!
 
thanks for the advice. the riding school dont appear to bothered as they arnt informing customers. I know via a livery whos on the yard. i guess they still have a business to run and if its isolated then its not a problem. i will carry on going i thing as they still need business but will be carefull to change before taking the kids to see their loan pony on the other yard.

Mmm, whilst I understand why businesses don't announce they have strangles, I don't agree with it. People need to be in an informed position so that they can decide wether they want to visit the site and also so that they might take precautions from spreading the disease. If I remember rightly the incubation period is up to 3 weeks, so unless this horse has had strangles on the yard for that length of time, they can't be sure it hasn't spread to other horses.

Several yards around us have strangles, only one (also a large business) has publicly declared this. I massively appreciate them doing this as it helps us to keep the horses on our yard protected by bringing in sensible precautions.
 
Strangles is carried in infected snot. So stay clear of the infected horse(s) and if you are going to both yards in one day, then go to the healthy pony's first, followed by the riding school. When you get home from the riding school wash all clothes/scrub boots and yourselves. That will keep the risk to pretty much zero.

therea a great fact sheet om the bha website...dont want to soind cheeky but please be so careful to change everything when dealing with the loan pony! having just dealt with 2 horses i would not wish it on anyone. i really think yards should be forced to advise people that they have it!
 
can u pm me too please - i just dont understand why infected yards are not forced to shut down and inform soem relevant authority to help stop this vile disease! Im not far away and lots of my yardmates travel around :(
 
Have sent out more private messages with the name. It would be so much easier to put it on here!!!! But rules and all. Can someone tell me if I am slowed to say what the yard hae and havnt done to control it? Or do I have I privately message you all that arenaskingvwith that info also? Thanks
 
On my thread about a yard with strangles someone else named without problem, it's still there.

I've found out that it was a pony that has had it and it is recoverying and the incubation period has passed and no more cases as yet. But the yard wasn't on lock down and there is a farm ride open opposite that I've used only 2 weeks ago.
