strangles at riding school in crewe/nantwich (cheshire) *advice*

Thanks cedars, it's definatly the truth. I have seen my friends (who is a livery) open letter that the yard released confirming the case. There is also a note on theirs coffee room notice board.

Black-horse-white: the horse that has contracted it is fairly new too the yard, within a couple of months. It might have had it a while but wasn't tested and confirmed until Monday I dont think from what I can gather. It's the only case on the yard that my friend is aware of although it is sharing its isolation field with another horse. That's also new to the yard. I don't know where these horses were kept before they moved to the yard but should possibly be investigated!?

Well then the horses from the yard should certainly not be going to the farm ride. I was told it was an isolated case, obviously not so someone is trying to play it down. Thanks for the tip off at least I can tell people on my yard to be careful.

They are isolated. Both horses are turned out in a field at the back of the premisis. The yard is no longer able to compete/hack until the horse gets 3 clear swabs and there are no new cases. That's the impression I got from talking to my friend. They may have been on the fun ride before they knew the horse was ill but the day the yard manger was told and got confirmation from the vets he restricted all the livery's movements I think. I can double check with my friend for you.
I don't think i said any of the horses have been tO the farm ride. There are some that are turned out in a field that jointing next to it but these are NOT infected that we know off. They have turnout fields just down the road as well but I think they are for riding school horses not the liveries.

Is it a notifiable disease then? I thought the owner did the right thing by isolating and restricting movement the day he was aware of the positive result? Do the owners legally have to tell the yard owner? And what about the vet.... Do they have to stay confidential to the owner in a strangles case?

I once had my horse tested for it when he had a throat problem. The vet told me to keep quiet as not to cause panic until it was confirmed. The test was negative, turned out to be cancer. Don't think it is notifiable but the infected horse should be isolated from the rest. All horses that have come into contact are normally tested too.

it is not anotifiable disease but it bloody should be. i thunk the horse owners need to tell the yo (common sense you would think) the vet is not allowed to disclose the info to anyone else

You implied to begin with that they were handling it badly-but now it sounds like one horse came onto the yard, went into isolation with one other horse (common practice) and only the original horse has tested positive?

If that's the case then they've done everything right and the yard would be fine to stay open as the horse was already in isolation so would not have had the chance to spread it to others?

Sorry for any mix up cedars, I personally think they have handled it well, as soon as they were aware of the situation. The bit that I wasn't sure of is that the liverys arnt allowed to hack out in case they spread it to others. They are doing that to check no new cases develop. When we go for lessons though there are bound to be people petting livery horses and then riding school horses. So going of what people have said there is a slim chance I could come into contact with the disease an pass it to my daughters loan pony on a different yard. The liveries have been informed but when I went for my lesson I was not made aware of the situation. That's the only ba handling bit I'm trying to get at.... Is that any clearer?

Hi,

Just to clear a few things up, the reason people were not told in the first place was because it wasn't confirmed and they needed to wait for another test which was confirmed on Monday. The infected horse is now out in the field segregated with the pony's companion, both pony's are out in the field far away from the riding school hence forth none of the customers are aware, no other horses on the yard have shown symptoms of strangles and both horses in the stables next too the infected horse have been swapped too see if they are a carrier or too see if they have been exposed to the virus.

Both the horse and the horses companion stables have been disinfected along with all tack and equipment just to be on the safe side.

The owners of the yard and riding school have done the correct thing by informing everyone when all 3 test came back as positive.

To be perfectly honest I think people who have heard little tails should speak to the yard owners to confirm the FULL STORY before giving their opinion on the situation.

The vet visited yesterday and is very happy with the progress of the infected horse, the horse is showing no signs what so ever of still having strangles.

And I would like everyone to think how the owner of the horse feels, do you really think that being a horse lover they want to put other horses at risk ??????

Rant over

Thanks

Hi
Could you please pm me the name of the yard too please as Im in contact with a lot of horses in that area and would not want to put anyone at risk. Try looking at the Animal Health Trusts website for advice and an update on research, it should help you come to a decision.
Many thanks

Hi,

There hasn't been any more confirmed cases of strangles on the yard. All horse's that was in direct contact with the pony have been swabbed and have come back clear. The pony who did have it is now out enjoying the british weather showing no signs what so ever of having had or still having strangles. This pony is also very far away from the yard and also any other horses other than her compainion who also looks like she isn't owned due to the weather, I assure you that she is. :)

Thanks for all your concerns and now that everything is clear we will be returing to normal on the 7th May 2012 and going on the fun ride on the Tuesday, Jokes......
