I don't know for sure dbard bur I would guess the vaccination takes a while to actually build up any protection for your horse. I'm sure I read somewhere that it isn't anything like 100% successful either but maybe something is better than nothing. I'd ask the vet.

Hi Dbard,
I am still in the final throes of an awful strangles outbreak at my yard. Fifteen weeks later, we are now only starting to get back to normality.
The reason I mention that is because my YM has now put in place the requirement that all new liveries are blood tested before arrival, as well as being quarrantined for a few weeks.
As Scotsmare says, the vaccine has been withdrawn, but there is an effective blood test that will tell you if your horse has or has been exposed to, strangles.
The blood test alone will cost about £30, but by the time you add in your vet's visit and sundries, it will be a bit more.
The results are available in a few days, usually.

If your prospective new yard is being this careful about strangles, I would say that was a very good thing.
You would not want to be in the position that I and many other girls at my yard have been in of having absolutely no summer at all because of this blessed bug.
