A recently purchased Pony from a New Forest yard has brought Strangles to our yard. The previous owners are somewhat dismissive of Strangles and maintain that it's so common in the New Forest that no one worries much!!! Can anyone confirm if this attitude is really is prevalent?

yes, there is strangles throughout the forest...they are feral animals and as such, it would be hard to treat....

as it can be a very unpleasant thing, with correct sanitation/isolation at your yard, i shouldnt think you'd need to panic too much.

I have experienced this attitude too, JAM 232.
Yes it is common, but it's so disruptive!!!
I'm still in the middle of an outbreak myself.

It is a bit of a common attitude, particularly with Y/o's that don't really manage their yards. if affected horses are isolated promptly you can help prevent the spread but there's still the chance.

It is horrible, but provided horses get the proper treatment and aftercare they recover very well.

We have had ferrral ponies standing at the gate to our yard with strangles before and luckily as yet never on the yard. It is endemic in the forest ponies so there is little we can do. We avoid riding out in the actual areas it has been reported but other than that take no extra precuations. It can only be spread by bodily fluid and will not survive outside the horse for very long, so easy to control if you are sensible.

It is unusual to see at this time of year though normally a winter problem.
If the yard the pony cam from had it at the time it was still naughty of them to not tell you, we are not that cavalier about it

It's always around somewhere on the open forest, but no I wouldn't say we're all not worried about it! That's a load of old rubbish if ever I heard some.

The sensible people (the majority) accept that it's always out there somewhere, and take all reasonable precautions to ensure their own ones don't get it. No drinking/grazing out on the forest allowed by horse/pony, keep well clear of anything that looks obviously unwell etc etc. Not exactly rocket science.

Would you care to PM me where they bought it from, I'd love to know...

It is around in the forest again at the moment and has been for the past month. Our yard is very careful and stops anyone coming on or off the yard from the forest when an outbreak occurs.

There is a very relaxed view about it by the forest pony owners as they just seem to be left out to get on with it which is so annoying as it means we can't use the forest for 12 weeks. The previous outbreak was in November and it was 2 ponies very close to us and they werent taken in so we had to wait it out.

I'm all for being careful, but if my yard enforced that rule we'd hardly ever be able to ride out.
