Ive heard from the chap who keeps his sheep with us - his daughter is on "the delivery ward" at Twemlows Stud that there is strangles there - two mares were sent home.
Not again! Happened last year too. They are currently bringing in recipient mares from all over the country for embryo transfer so quite a high risk of carrying infection I would have thought
This is utter crap, I send 25% of my clients to Twemlows and speak to them a minimum of twice a day. I was there last week and the week before and walked around all the fields.
We do not have strangles at Twemlows Hall. Visiting mares to this Stud have to have negative strangles and EVA blood tests before being allowed to stay; other mares including new recipient mares are held in our quarantine unit one mile away until we have negative blood test results. Any mares tested positive for either blood test are either returned or treated. This may be the reason for the false rumour but what it has shown is that there are a lot of strangles carriers which owners dont know about. Our screening has been very successful.
