Strangles Outbreak At Twemlows

This is not surprising at all as they have mares from all over the country coming in

.

I stopped using them last year as I felt that the 'mare' side' of things was not up to scratch.... A real shame as Tullis and his unit are fabulous !!

they certainly do ask for all horses to be blood tested before going. i know three of mine have gone and all had to be tested, one had to be tested twice so if they have got an outbreak it could discredit the strangles bloodtest.

I didnt send three of mine this year as one of my mares was there when strangles broke out last year and it was a bit pricey, however i regret not sending them there now as the mare side is definitely better than the other stud i sent them to.

wow thats shocking to hear!

I didnt send my mare last year as the price was outrageous, i dont mind paying for good service but it seemed very OTT plus I have a fab centre on my doorstep

dont suppose anyone has given them a call to find out, as hear say and chinese whispers can be very damaging to anyones business.

whether you like/dislike, do use or do not use twemlows for one reason or another think how you would feel if someone posted on a public forum something about your business/yard etc etc.

ok i understand warnings should be given but do we have any hard facts or is it just hear say

i heard three weeks ago about it, but i asked ken if he had heard anything as i was thinking of useing his stallion to send my mare there.but he hadnt so i thought it was a rumour, sorry maybe i should have said something

This is classic horse world rumour mill. There is no foundation to this rubbish. I have been to Twemlows in the last two weeks and walked around the fields, THERE IS NO STRANGLES. I speak to Twemlows twice a day and I've had them on the phone this afternoon, and I send about 25% of my clients there.

Not cool guys, throwing crap at peoples businesses is really not cool.

Moderator, please get this crap taken off the baord.

We do not have strangles at Twemlows Hall. Visiting mares to this Stud have to have negative strangles and EVA blood tests before being allowed to stay; other mares including new ‘recipient mares’ are held in our quarantine unit one mile away until we have negative blood test results. Any mares tested positive for either blood test are either returned or treated. This may be the reason for the false rumour but what it has shown is that there are a lot of strangles carriers which owners don’t know about. Our screening has been very successful.

That is great news THSF.

I feel awful as I started the thread - but I did check the source and it was a member of your staff who told a friend ..... although - as you say - it was prob with regards to a mare on the 'quarantine unit' & this was not fully made clear .

I am very sorry - I did NOT post this to cause you and/or your business any harm.
I think it is relavent to bring mare owners attention to outbreaks in the country (NOT to point the finger!!) But because NO mare owner would wish to pass on or contract Stranges (or anything else) with thier mares .......

Good to see your Quarentine screening are sucessful.

Having sent a very difficult mare to Twemlows a couple of years ago (she got in foal first attempt!) I have to disagree. My mare was a TB, hyper-excitable type, lost weight at the drop of a horse-nut - she came back looking fantastic and having put ON weight. When I collected her she was groomed and very tidy.

I'd agree with you re Tullis and the stallion side though - fabulous!

Too right their prices are outrageous

The only price that matters at the end of the day is the total cost of getting your mare in foal. Yes, Twemlows is more expensive than some - but good facilities and good staff cost! I know plenty of people who have sent their mares to 'cheaper' places and it's ended costing them a LOT of money as mares returned, cycle after cycle, because the studs concerned did not attend to the fine detail which is often the difference between a timely pregnancy and a barren mare.

In the case of my mare, we had tried to get her in foal (natural cover) for 1 full season with no joy - haemorrhagic follicles, failure to show in season for more than 5 minutes at a time, etc. etc. Her scans alone at home that year totalled more than the vet package AND keep charges the following year at Twemlows. I had no complaints at all.

wel said janet, as i said i made the mistake of not sending some there this year, two because i wanted to use resident stallions from another stud and one for all the wrong reasons.

i have learnt my lesson and will go back to twemlows with them all next year
