Hi guys,

There has been a outbreak of strangles near Bristol, but some of the riders on the yard are not abiding by rule and are not waiting for three clear blood tests after each new horse has been diognosed and are going out knowing competing coming from a yard like this. Surely DEFRA or any other Equine associates should make a rule that would mean they could notify other local yards of a recent outbreak and where it is just so we can all keep away and know that if we see riders out from that yard they shouldn't be and get a warning or prosecuted? Our horses are to precious to get ill or possible face being put down mearly because somebody could not let others know what is going on or due to some owners being so inconsiderate and wait till they had the all clear.

Something should be put in place for the safety of all horses and to stop small cases turning into outbreaks in areas of the country. Was thinking of setting up a petition to send to DETRA to support my comment above, need feedback before I proceed.

Thanks guys:)

hi
i know it is incredibly annoying when people behave like this but making strangles a notifiable disease is not really the answer.
it will just cause a whole lot more trouble and upset ,look at the way defra dealt with the swamp fever outbreak , i looked into this a few years ago and it was really not the lesser of two evils ,i can't remember all the details but resurch how they deal with notifiable diseases and its not just a case of "yard must tell all and stay indoors"

in the mean time there are things you can do.
ring your local BHS welfare adviser ,they were great and actually advertised the fact that a certain rescue center had it and advised to stay away.

avoid equestrian centers where horses are going from the area and let the organisers know why you are not going ,make as much noise as poss about it

and when you are out keep yourself safe ,get your horse out -compete - put it back on box.
don't get to close to other horses etc

Its a very difficult subject, and I understand where you're coming from, but without seeing these things going on for myself I refuse to pass judgement on what is essentially gossip.

I will say that there is no law or otherwise that states horses on a yard with confirmed strangles have to stay put. So whilst I would never be going off if our yard had positive cases, there is nothing to stop people going off the yard. I just hope they would behave like me and be considerate of other horse owners in the area :)

Totally agree with your comments. I just think there must be something we can do as things like this have happened around here too many times unfortunatley most yard keep quiet as they feel it will give them a bad name and in this case the riders moving to compete have now passed it on to more than two other yards. This is why I think something has to be done. Should it be passed onto large livery centres or competition centres it would cause utter problems. Some riders are even moving yards and not letting the new yard know of their situation! Even the vets have told them they must not move anywhere! Grrrr makes me so angry that people behave like this and put other peoples horses at danger just to do a ten min dressage test! sorry for the rant but some people!!!!!

I just don't know why strangles has to be "a difficult subject". Why can't people just be open about where local cases are - forewarned is forearmed and people can just take sensible precautions then. As someone local I've heard similar from 2 different sources though it was to do with someone hacking out from an infected yard rather than competing. I even had one person who shares a horse at the main yard effected, who I bumped into a month or so ago in town, deny it was strangles when I asked how it was going. Strange as the local vets say it is or was... I think being upfront about it just helps us all rather than pretending.

Just want to applaude you all for your advice and words it is nice to know other riders feel the same way, we don't want to cause trouble or be cross at anyone as strangles can happen to anyone but by letting all other owners know about a case at a yard you can help make everyone aware and to stay away hopefully stoping any further cases happening. Unfortunatley yard owners and riders are not doing this and putting everyone elses horses and ponies at risk. Cases could be prevented should somebody just speak up and let everyone know, it annoys me people do not listen to vets advise and stay in but risk hacking and competing at the expense of other horses. There are also cases in Bath I believe...... lets just hope people can be sensible and stay put till they all have the all clear. Thanks for all your advise and words guys:D

If it's the infected yard that I think it is, it's not the first time they have infected other yards with strangles when they have had an outbreak. Can you please PM me the name of the yard?

Can't believe people try to hide it! As you rightly said forewarned is forarmed, I am competing tomorrow but I am actually thinking of withdrawing as I can't take risks if somebody has come from a yard infected. Being upfront to all other local equine owners would help us imensly.

I have never been able to understand all the hush hush thing about strangles it is nothing to be ashamed of and unless it go to ******* strangles then the vet can treat it.
It really annoys me when horses have strangles, ringworm etc and yards keep it quiet and carry on as normal and then it is other yards that also end up with the problem.
Why can we not in the horse world have just a bit of consideration for the rest of the horsey people out there and just say we have strangles or what ever on our yard why all the secrecy.
