Hi, I'm new to the forum. I have a new horse which has had a confirmed case of strangles. Four abscesses developed and burst under the jaw and the wounds began scabbing over about 10 days ago.
The horse has quite a lot of swelling still under the upper jaw area near the windpipe where the skin is firm to the touch.
Horse was prescribed antibiotics for 7 days after the initial abscesses had burst but I'm wondering what I should do with the remaining swollen area. I have used hot compresses but no abscesses are now forming.
The horse is very happy and has a great appetite. We are due another blood test again in a week.
Any advice would be gratefully received!
Thanks.

The inflammation does take a time to go down, keep fomenting the abscess sites daily to keep them soft so that if there is any build up of pus it can then drain - Check and see if the scabs are really sound, if they won't come away with warm soapy water then the wouond is usually clean, if the scab comes away then there is usually unhealthy tissue beneath it.

As the vet is coming next week you can ask about the swellings if they've not yet gone down.
