Hello Guys

Just wanted other peoples thoughts on this saga .....

I had my pony vaccined against strangles back in december - the whole thing wasnt cheap when considering call out fees etc .........

Now the thing that bloody annoys me is that this vaccince has been taken off the market with not a sniff of a refund to horse owners!! My friend has sold a horse who had the vaccine - so basically she has lost £50 in for nothing and the horses arent covered for sqwat.

I have just been on to my vets for a routine teeth check and asked them about getting my money back for the strangles jab (which legally you are entitled to as the vets have sold you a product that is faulty etc consumer rights blah blah blah.. even though I know its not the the vets fault) and they are not giving refunds at the moment as they are waiting for the manufacturers of the jab to make their minds up as to what to do. So fair enough horses are a pain in the a$se and these things happen but I am annoyed that my vets stated once the vaccine was back on the market I will get the jabs free of charge but will still have to pay a call out fee!!

I am so annoyed that the strangles bungle is costing me and other so much money and are horses arent even covered!!

Typical!!

Are others annoyed at this ?

Yes I was annoyed ,we had both of ours done.Initial injections [2] and the following year and I don't think it gave them any protection in fact from what I read they could have got it worse. Absolute waste of money but don't think I will ever get any back

that is exactly why i didn't go for the vacene. Also because it is injected into the lip which my mare wouldn't of tollerated. When it came out there were doubts as to if it was effective so I decided to bide my time and wait and see if it does work. I'm glad I did and I dont see the point in vacinating against it anyway as you still were at risk of your horse contracting it.

I know what you mean - I only had it as the yard I am on made it mandatory as the yard is so big (50 horses +)

My YO friend who had about ten horses on her yard wasnt going to bother as she felt that it was just the manufactures promoting the vaccine to make more money.

I am so cross that my horse had to go through the injection for nothing

It was mandatory on our yard aswell I had other pony at the time it first came out, so had her done straight away and had the next one aswell. Got new horse and didnt bother am so glad I didnt as what a waste of money that would have been. He has had all other jabs but didnt have strangles had only just got him and then it was recalled.

I think that Intervet have stated that when they re-introduce the vaccine they will cover the costs of restarting the program - unclear if this is just the vaccine cost or also the cost of the vets fees..........!

I think the only people who have had money back/compensation are those who had the jabs and then went on to develop strangles symptoms.

These things take ages to sort out unfortunately so even if they do hand back the costs to owners who had the course of jabs I suspect it wont be very soon. Presumeably someone will have to prove with no shadow of a doubt that the jab truly didnt work....not easy.
