we are having the vaccine done tomorrow as there is quite a few cases down our way. Has anyone had it done i would appreciate any feedback good or bad. Thanks

Oh, I was just about to start an identical thread. I was supposed to be getting it done on monday but I have decided to cancel till I hear a bit more about it.

I had mine done last month after the second injection one horse was so Ill that the vet had to come out at eleven pm as the horse had a very high temperature was shaking from head to foot and had stopped passing droppings.his lip swelled up alarmingly a week later pus exploded out of his muzzle.
So there's no way I will be trying that again
Vet put my yard on lockdown when the muzzle abbcess burst we had isolate the horse I missed clinics and shows it was a disaster.never again.

Had the first 2 jabs a few years ago as the yard we were on made it a 'do it or leave' thing. My sister did research and spoke to our vet but the ym still wouldnt listen after i had spent £300 we got a letter saying we didnt need the next.jab as reports showed it didnt work.....to say i angry was an understatement. Would never have it done again as horses more offen then not have a bad reaction to it.

X

I was going to ask about this too as I know a couple of people who have had their horses vaccinated and apparently they are looking a bit depressed atm :( I had heard that it wasn't scientifically proven to work yet

My horse was a lot more than a bit depressed he was very unwell indeed.

I mentioned this to my vet last week and he told me that in most cases the horses are very unwell and that it only offers limited protection, if any anyway. The problem apparently is due to the fact that one attack of Strangles doesn't provide immunity for horses afterwards.

My vet does not recommend giving the vaccine and says that with correct management and careful observation the spread can be contained to the original yard, although he believes in most cases that trying to isolate individual horses on a yard with an outbreak can in some cases prolong the time the Strangles is around.

Imo vets r doing it for the money...up my way yards are getting it done but without getting horses checked to see whether they are carriers of the disease which i think is fairly pointless. anyway not actually heard whether it is proven to work or not wouldnt waste my money

I remember going to a talk arranged by our vets a few years ago now when they first introduced a strangles vaccine and it seemed to be quite a faff as you needed a jab more than once a year and they weren't guaranteeing it would keep strangles away, just that if they were infected it wouldn't be as bad. Then all of a sudden the jab got withdrawn and it was back to the drawing board. So it sounds that they're re-introduced it have they?

Yes that sounds incredibly scary and painfull for your poor horse :( I don't think I'll be getting my boy done after reading these posts

He's not back to work yet but think he could work now he was practising his passage today in the field and took his rug off ( or got his friend to do it ).
Fingers crossed he's fine.

Aw that's good! I love it when they do stuff like that in the field (except the rug bit! ha ha!) it always cheers me up :D My fingers are crossed for him too!

Ollies mum theyv re introduced it you need to get initial jag then booster after maybe 3 months then its either 6 months or yearly booster. hope this makes sense lol

We have to have it due to yard policy. After one injection my horse had a lump on his lip which was a bit sore for 2 days but no other reactions. I think 1 other horse has had a lump and 2 have been depressed for a day onetime but no serious reactions on a yard of 22 which have had this for 15 months now.

I have decided against it, thanks for all your replies they were really helpful. Just going to keep up the good stable management and be vigilant.

theres strangles outbreaks about 20 miles from here at the moment. around 15 horses on our yard have it with no problem.

booster every 3 to 6 months depending on risk.

this is the new version of the vaccine though, not long released

Our yard are also vaccinating - ive decided against it after talking to my vet as it's not particularly effective and can have nasty side effects. If it were effective I'd have had it done. It's an injection in the horses lip and needs a booster every three and six months to start with. To me the best way to prevent an outbreak of strangles is to have good strict stable management.
