Strangles vaccines..???

Out of curiosity. ..I keep seeing posts about strangles etc...does nobody vaccinate their horses against this?? I realise that the vaccines are not terribly cheap and dont necessarily offer 100% protection but surely better than nothing if you feel your horse could potentially be at risk?? Esp those on livery yards. Ours live out 24/7 but are vaccinated against strangles as a matter of course now xx
 
Don't do it.
It is spread by contact [contageous] therefore, before introducing a new animal to the herd, have it blood tested [ie is it a carrier] and isolated for 2-3 weeks.
Dont allow horses to sniff others and if out and about, keep your own animals "in isolation" from others.
Be sensible. Keep your trailer clean, clean clothing, etc. Never, ever share haynets.

The vaccines don't protect agenst all the strains either. Waste of money.

In the strangle scare about 5 years ago I had a fall out with a yard owner of a very big yard. And he wanted all vaccinations done. I didn't as knew it Dnt work. 2 months later got a letter saying not to continue as not proven to work.

Alot of the horses had bad reactions wich looked awful
 
It's the one vaccine that I do not allow horses on my yard to be given. If owners want to give their horse this vaccine then they need to leave my property and find somewhere else to keep their horse.
 
It's very dangerous for them. With in hours one mare poor girl her face! From her injection point under top lip blew up. Swollen her muzzle. Under her chin up her face

Others had bad swellings but not as bad as her

It made three out of four of my horses ill and one so ill it needed emergency treatment in the middle of the night how the company tested it and thought it was fit for market I can't work out .
