STRANGLES!!! waring and advice!

recently there has been an out break of strangles in cornwall near where i live and keep my horses.

how do horses catch strangles? how bad can it get? what are the symptoms?
is my foal more at risk?
HELP!!

Generally speaking Strangles is only contracted by youngish ponies and horses who have been in direct contact with a carrier, i.e another horse that infected.

Alternatively it can be transmitted by tack or saddlery, rugs etc or people, who are in direct contact with infected horses.

The symptons are intial listlessness and then a whopping great pustular sore develops beneath the jaw. The pustular sore ouses a foul discharge.

Strangles is not like Foot and Mouth disease that can be spread on the air, it is very much direct contact.

Strangles is not a notafiable disease as is such as Anthrax or Foot and Mouth Disease.

However, in my opinion it should be!

If you have any concerns talk to your Vet - asap.
 
Strangles is endemic in Cornwall. There have been at least two outbreaks in the county this year.
Just use your common sense - don't go touching other peoples horses & then your own without washing your hands. If you go to someone elses yard at the very least wash your hands & disinfect your boots - a complete change of clothes would be better.

Remember too though that the person whose ponies have strangles hasn't brought it in the area just to upset you, or any other owners in the vicinity. It can happen to any of us at any time.
 
First off.....DONT GET HYSTERICAL........we have a case on our yard,Horse is kept segregated and disinfectant is used at all times.
Only his owner goes near him and she changes clothes after she sees to him

i understand this and im not upset or blaming them i would just rather my horses didnt get it and wanted to know the bast way to keep mine free of it.

Thanks for all advice, i know know mine havent got it and how to keep them as safe as possible, and know what to look for incase they do get it.
