Friend has called up panicking.

her pony has been diagnosed with Strangles.

She basically lives in the middle of no where, and dosnt have the best vets!!!

so has been giving him bute, kept his temp ok, but he has now developed a nasty lump which seems to be putting pressure on his windpipe.

the vet has been, said to bear with it, and to hope it pops asap.

any tips on getting it to burst quicker???? apart from applying heat?

no idea sorry but I hope your friend and her pony get through this without too much distress <<hugs and healing vibes>>

She can help the abscess to come to a head by putting warm towels over it and replacing them frequently. Tell her not to be too worried about it all. The condition will run it's course and generally there are no concerns.

Once the abscess bursts tell her to use Povidone Iodine to squirt into the wound and anything where the snot ends up on. Povidone kills strep on contact so is invaluable to have around strangley horses.

Good luck to her.

her vet has gave her penacillin to inject.

I know there has been some sepcalation regarding antibiotics and strangles.

unfortunatly she hasnt got internet to reasearch much and cant speak a great deal of french to ash her vet!

Each to their own, but I would not let Penicillin G anywhere near a horse with an uncomplicated case of strangles. Best of luck to her though.
