i have noticed there have been a few topics on this and quite a few people seem scared of it so i have done this poll to see what people think and how much they know

this is just me being nosey and if you don't want to answer it don't.

Yes I have directly dealt with strangles twice in my lifetime. I know a fair amount about it as have thoroughly researched it, that and had experience of dealing with it. Doesn't bother me if I hear of a yard who has it, I'd just keep away, and I don't worry about my yard getting it; I'd just deal with it if it came along.

Strangles on a nearby yard doesn't worry me as long as all sensible precautions are being followed - eg quarantine etc. There was a horse locally that had strangles and was being kept in a field next to a bridleway and would stand at the fence trying tot alk to passing horses - now that worries me. When a horse at our yard had strangles we took all the necessary precautions and some people had to miss shows etc but we all agreed it was the safe and responsible thing to do - not just for our horses but for other peoples too.

My now 4yr old picked up strangles at a large agricultural show as a yearling, fortunately she was the only one affected but as we were on a yard at the time, quarantine in the middle of a hot summer wasn't pleasant. I don't think theres any point in worrying about it because until you know your horse has it there's no point! By all means be careful if there is suspected / known strangles in the area but otherwise just deal with it!

Our yard had strangles afew years ago - a new livery came that turned out to be a carrier. Three out of 45 horses caught it and one of the three was mine.
There is WAY too much hysteria about strangles.
I went for the option 'it worries me' but to be honest it is the inconvenience that worries me more than the disease - we compete a lot in the summer and my daughter missed the best part of the season which was frustrating.
Strangles is not the end of the world but many people seem to believe it is!

i have had a horse that has had strangles and i couldn't believe the hype surrounding it. thats why i did this poll. my last yard was split by it, half were on my side and were always asking how my mare was (she was on a seperate stable block in isolation). and a few posts on here about it have been simliar with regards to the hype of paranioa ect. please don't take affence to this

I have studied it so know a lot (but I won't say I know pretty much everything because there is a lot we may not know about it - lol)

But I have never had the misfortune to experience it.

IMO, people get very het up about it & this is not necessary. Strangles is not as scary as most people think. it is ESSENTIAL however, to follow the quarantine instructions. The scariest thing about the illness is the speed & ease of how it spreads.

Ive been on a yard with strangles and all the quarantine is a bit of a pain but necessary....It does worry me as strangles is nearby as it is a disease that can be carried on the wind like many equine diseases.

thats a common misconception, its not airborne not carried by air, its is spread by direct contact (i.e touching noses ect) or indirect (i.e sharing same food/waer buckets rugs ect, or getting on to humans clothing)

Incorrect! It is not an airborne condition, it is a direct-contact condition.

But strangles is NOT airborne!! (at least not for long distances).

One of the biggest problems is that education is really lacking about the disease. (Not getting at you Ginger_Nut)

I find the resulting hysteria arising from news of a strangles outbreak in the locality of their yard rather tiresome, frankly.

I have experienced strangles yes, and they can be really rather ill with it and take a long time to pick up again afterwards. It most certainly is not necessarily the end of the world though which seems to be the reaction of many people, although they are not prepared to quarantine themselves to minimise the chances of contracting it.

All the same though, I prefer it when it's not doing the rounds down here which it is at the moment (as usual)

The bacteria Strptococcus Equi cna actually be airbourne and contributes to the disease strangles. So for instance if a yard a few miles away had a strangles outbusrt my horse could potentially get it.

The strangles bug can linger for several weeks in the environment, so may persist in dirty stables. Fortunately, this infection is not airborne, so it will not spread long distances without some kind of direct contact.

Streptococcus Equi is NOT an airborne bacteria, it is spread by direct contact.

GingerNut - yours is the sort of inaccurate information which gets people even more worried than they already are. Please do some further research and stop telling people things which aren't so. And no your horse could not catch it from a horse on a yard a few miles away.

Ralph has had strangles twice now and to be honest, I'm not phased about it now. I think its a pain in the neck when your horse gets it, but as long as you deal with it correctly, it's no big problem.

My horse developed strangles the day I was due to get her vetted (great timing) so had to wait a fair while longer for her than I had planned. I read up quite a bit about it at the time and also had lots of chats with my vet - well the vet doing my vetting. I woulnd't be worried if a yard nearby got it unless they were being careless in the way they were handling the situation.

the area im in, back in end of aug 2 yards got it within 1 week of each other
on our yard it turned out to be a carrier (the horse had come from holland prior to arriving at our yard) only 4 horses out of 25 got it
all the precaution were taken
i know some of the owners who horses had it felt like they were treated as leopors (sp) with the other horse owners being weary of them and hardly talking to them
unfortuntely the vet wasnt that reliable with the test ect so we didnt get the all clear for at least 3 months from the date the vet confirmed the first horse had it

it doesnt worry me if its on another yard , you just take the precautions you need to take with your own horse ect
there is alot of myths ect and panick with the 'S' word, but it happens i guess
