there is an outbreak at a yard in my area. my main concern is that one of the girls who has a pony at my place, has 2 more at the infected yard. she knows she will need to be careful about not spreading it, but i'm worried. is there anything we can do to prevent it?

other than insisting on good hygeine and ensuring that the horse she keeps with you is the only horse she has contact with on the yard until the other yard has the all clear probably not alot you can do short of refusing her access to her horse which is obviously not going to be practical.

She should wear totally clean clothes each day including discinfected boots and come to your yard before going to the infected yard. On return home discinfect and wash clothes and bath herself. Obviously if it all possible it would be better to only go to one of the yards at the moment but I doubt that is possible. Also not to touch/stroke any horses on either yard except the ones she is seeing to.

Agree with Divasmum. In addition to her excellent advice, I would say:

1. Download the PDFs at the bottom of this page and stick the poster up on her yard so everyone knows what to do: http://www.worldhorsewelfare.org/information/disease

2. Move her horse to a stable where she will not to be passing other horses (so on a quiet part of the yard) and ensure she uses totally separate tools and buckets for her horse - mark them so you all know.
