Just wanted to get some other peoples perspectives on nearby yards being notified of a Strangles outbreak.

I have very recently found out that a small yard that basically backs onto the land that I rent has had cases of strangles for the past three months but I have only just heard about it.

Surely common sense and decency should mean that we are notified as not only are our horses at risk of this nasty infection, we hack out and compete and could have unknowingly spread this further.

Not sure if I should approach the people that run the yard or just keep well away.

I have spoken to my Vet about the possibility of getting the horses vaccinated but they didn't seem all that keen and after doing a bit of research there's quite a few horror stories. We are now keeping the horses well away by blocking off the top fields but it is still a worry.

Just feel very uneasy that my horses health has been put at risk due to some silly stigma...

Just like to get a few thoughts from others.

Thanks in advance

We have a yard next to us that has a case of strangles. The yard was shutdown immediately and they rang all the neighbouring yards as soon as the test results came back positive. The whole area is on high alert anyway because of the EHV outbreak. I think that is the way it should be managed, secrecy just leads to spread.
