Hi guys. Im new here so hello everyone!
I have been having a read in the forums on here and read about straw bale field shelters. I think this is a great idea for a tempary shelter and i am really considering doing this. I hear you have very, very large straw bales that are wrapped in plastic and then completely wrapped in chicken wire to stop any chewing. I hear you put them in a x or E shape, 2 bales high in a brick building pattern and can fix a roof with steels going through the middle if you like but i think i will proberly just have it like a wind break. Have any of you seen and of this type of shelter or know of anyone who usin it? Pictures would be great so i can really imagion what it would look like. Ive a 16.2 cob x shire who is very hardy and HATES stables! I also have a 11.2 section A who is quite fine, getting on a bit and quite likes coming in. Problem is they are inseprable and my big chap, Klaud is the leader and as he hates my lovely purpose built expensive stable block which they have acess to 24/7, he wont go near them so theres no hope Toffee will come in on his own accord. The stables are outside my house but join onto the field so they can come in if they want. The grazing is round the corner so if Toff did come in, Klaud wouldnt be able to see him and would panic! I dont have much money to spend on a field shelter but i have been put off by some pictures i saw on here of one trashed by wind and thats what makes me think happened to Klaud which is why he hates stables so much. As we live on top of a valley which is windy at times, i want something very strong, hence the bales! Its just a windbreak that i can put in the field and i know toff can get out of driving rain and gale winds if he needs to and klad is happy he can see him and may even use it himself. What do you think? pictures and experiances if you knowof anyone please everyone. xxxxxx

A friend of mine built a similar thing but she used railway sleepers instead of bales - drove some posts in then built a wall of sleepers in the shape of a cross. She put gravel down and a ring tie for a haynet in each section so they could move out of the wind and driving rain. It worked really well :)

My previous yard did this last winter. My TB also hates being stables so is out 24/7 in -25 temps (& sometimes down to -35). The YO built a large U shaped shelter with bales, no plastic or wire and it lasted fine even in blizzard conditions. My girl was unclipped and in a HW rug with ad lib hay and came out of winter a little too fat!
