Depends on the weight of the bales, we would use 2

I use Barley Straw and it takes 2 1/2 bales and that is a very large bed with large banks.

i am talking standard £1 bales.

It took me 6 bales with a nice big bed and compressed bankings.

Thank you for all of your replies. I have never put down a new straw bed before. I think I am going to need 5 bales to get started.

that sounds good.
you need to not feel the stable floor when you plunge the prong into the bed.
