Straw in the trailer or not?

I have a single trailer with plain rubber down, no grips or anything so I usually tend to travel with straw to soak up any wee and to give a bit of grip. However, practising loading I haven't used anything and I travelled without straw for 2 minutes a few days ago - what would be best for him?!

I think it depends on your mats to a degree, some are slippier than others when wet/dirty. I personally never travel with straw, as I've never had a problem with them slipping and my mare often pees in it with no problems. I've got a Bateson Ascot, not sure what yours is like? If it's totally flat rubber with no ridged grip bits then I would definately put straw down but sometimes it can be slippy too so I'd probably go for shavings in that case!

Its completely flat, when we rebuilt the trailer we reused the matting to save on another £50! I never had any problems with straw but don't know if it'd encourage him to load more without the straw. My only concern with shavings would be that he'd perhaps slip on them :/ hmm! Don't know what to do

I use wood shavings to soak urine and grass poo at this time of year. Would prefer that than her slipping while travelling.

A horse transporter once asked me to rub some fresh straw between my fingers to see how slippy it was and why he NEVER used it in any horse transport. If you need to use anything use shavings.

I don't use anything in the trailer or lorry either; if they're going to panic, bedding is much more likely to slip.

I use straw- makes mucking the box out so much easier and stops poo becoming ingrained in IW matting which has tiny channels
