Does anyone use straw pellets from Straw Pellets Ltd? If so, is there any difference between the pellets used for fuel and the pellets they call Stable Gold Horse Bedding?

I ask because there's 20% vat on horse bedding and only 5% vat on fuel. I've used wood pellets in the past and there's no diffence between the fuel wood pellets and the bedding (apart from 15% vat of course!)

no there is no differecne between the horse bedding and the fuel pellets. The price is different as they have to charge vat on animal bedding but not fuel.

However if you order pellets at the fuel price but intend to use them for horses that is FRAUD and you could be prosecuted.

Shakes head in disbelief. If you buy fuel pellets and use them for some thing else thats up to you. How on earth is that fraud ? What you do with goods you have purchased is up to you. Its not like you are buying red diesel and using it on the road !

Who in is ever going to know ? "CSI" are not going to swoop in and examine your pee soaked pellets !

I buy wood pellets at fuel price and use them in my stable, much cheaper. Might as well get it cheaper since we are all getting robbed at the "actual" fuel pumps :D

I normally put the pellets down and then straw on top cause it looks warm :D

I view it as very similar to your red diesel senario as red diesel has reduced duty on it as it is used for a specific purpose. IMO it is fraud as when used for fuel the VAT is 5%, same as other heating fuels, which is to reduce the cost for household heating. Animal bedding is VAT rated at the full 20%. Stable Gold / Straw Pellets Ltd distinguish beteen the two uses for this reason although they are the same product. When you buy from them (and most other bedding pellet sites) the cost for the different uses are shown clearly. I'm sure the risk of getting caught out is small if you are only buying for one or two horses however I have heard of companies where the delivery address has been checked by HM Revenue and bedding pellets bought as fuel have been invesigated. As I buy an average of 4 tonnes a month it's a risk I'm not willing to take.

Good god! That can no way be cost effective for Revenue and Customs to spend their time checking straw/wood pellets. The cost of the investigations must far outway any revenue they get back!

Red diesel, on the other hand, I can understand, it's a big deal.
