Horse is currently on shavings. But using at least 5 bales a week which is eye watering. Especially now yo says they can't go out. He is wet sort of messy but quite clean with his poo in one place mostly. But the wet bedding is moved around and spreads. I was wondering about a couple of bags of strawmax on the pee zone and leaving it almost deep litter then the shavings on top. As much as I like a nice deep clean shavings bed my bank balance does not!

Or aubiose, on the same system?

I've tried this. I did like strawmax, it's cheap and absorbant. I remove the wet patches daily which is still quite easy to muck out. Unfortunately I've had to switch to miscanthus pellets as one of my horses dug through the shavings and started chomping them down. They're very dry and I was worried about colic. I'm thinking of switching back to wood pellets as one is on box rest and the cost of all the bedding as well as hay is eye watering now. I stopped using wood pellets as they got expensive at one point but back to looking cost effective now.

Another here with one who decided they were a great snack 🫣 ours also eat the wheat straw type shavings such as unibed... we have to keep some dirty bedding and mix in with the new stuff to make it less appetising...

I use strawmax pellets under my straw bedding. Fortunately greedy pony hasn’t found them but did try to take a mouthful out of the bag once 🙄 (won’t eat her straw chaff though)

They are so much more absorbent than shavings. I also take out the wet stuff daily.

Strawmax was no good for either of my horses - one a messy git and the other with specific toileting areas - I used it as a base layer with Bedmax on top and I ended up taking both beds out within 2.5 weeks - painful for the wallet and back breaking work!

I put about 6 or 7 bags underneath to give a nice decent base to work with and even with doing that it was a no go - and this was without my boys being in for whatever reason.......

I use the Snowflake Premium Wood Pellets and find they are the best for absorbency x

I highly recommend aubiose using the semi deep littering method that they recommend.

Although mine all go out every day so I cannot vouch for how it would stand up to 24/7 use. If the bed is made very deep it should work well.

I tried Strawmax under Laysoft in the peeing area when my local shop ran out of wood pellets. All was good, although the bed was a gross colour, until my horse decided the pellets were delicious. The mice in the shed also discovered this....

Mine took a couple mouthfuls at first, so I added a tiny smidge of jeyes fluid to the water I used to dampen them, and she hasn't tried to eat them since, nor have I needed to add the jeyes to the water.

Sun E Bed are much less tasty than Strawmax & do a fab job of soaking up the wet under Dave's straw bed.
Dave also ate Strawmax but leaves Sun E Bed alone & they also don't need soaked & are cheaper.

I am a complete convert to semi deep litter aubiose (ie the way it’s supposed to be used), previously I have used less aubiose on top straw pellets and using it properly means I’m probably spending £6 a week (bale every 2/3 weeks) on bedding for a very wet pony. I cannot stand shavings!
