Driving home last night, and saw some ladies in the village who'd found a poor blind and very distressed dog wandering around, bumping into everything. They had managed to get a lead on her, but every time they tried to get close to her, she had a go at them - she didn't even have many teeth so couldn't do much harm, but it was very upsetting and scary nonetheless.

Anyway, to cut a very long story short, we eventually managed to get her in the back of my 4x4, and I took her to the local emergency vet, who took her in.

Just rung to check on her - she is doing well and had a good night, but doesn't have a microchip, so she is going to have to go to the dog warden :( I was really hoping she'd just escaped from a garden, but it's looking more like she was dumped.

Really makes me cross & upset - how can people do that? It was -2 when we found her, if she hadn't been run over by a car, she would have probably died of hypothermia.

The council were absolutely useless, they did have an out of hours call service, but all they did was tell you to ring the vets. If the dog had been a bit bigger, there's no way we could have got close enough to her to pick her up - she was so distressed. We don't carry dog-catchers or muzzles on us, so what on earth would they have expected us to do?

I cannot comprehend people that dump dogs.
I found a puppy on Saturday morning when it was -4 out, reported to Police and Dog Warden, put on Dog Lost website, nothing at all has been reported.
Looking at the age and breed type I found, I'm thinking Christmas puppy that they're already fed up with, he however managed to land on his feet as if no one claims him, my friend will take him (currently staying with me for the 7 days), puppies should be microchipped before they have left the breeder and the breeders details should be maintained to be contacted in the event they are lost and owners cannot be contacted, wonder if that would make people think 1)about breeding dogs for profit and 2)the sort of people they are selling the puppies to.

Shame for the elderly dog, did you get a chance to get a picture that could be posted on the dog lost website, just in case she has been lost?
Asking this as someone on here found an elderly Jack Russell, turned out if belonged to an older lady and the carer had let the dog out and forgot to let it back in, and the lady didn't notice until much later.

I didn't think of taking a picture :(

Poor dog, I hope someone comes forward for her. She may just have wandered off, we had a bark at the front door at 10.30pm one night, opened door and a lovely older dog just walked in, no collar, nothing. To cut a long story short she had wandered off and nobody had noticed she had gone - she was reunited with her owner eventually but no one was out looking for her.

Well said Naryafluffy re the microchipping and breeders:) And how lucky for the dog you found !

He was really lucky, I had about 5 responsible dog people that I know that would have taken him if he wasn't claimed.
You can still put the details on Doglost website without a picture, I didn't put a picture of the puppy I found because of his type and issues with fighting going on (bait dogs are being stolen in the general area).

Accoring to my local dog warden they will steal anything for dog fighting these days - my mini yorkie was taken from my garden and when i managed to get hold of the warden (they work 12-3 in my area!!! didn't know dogs could onlt go missing at those times!) he kindly told me that she'd prob been stolen for dog baiting as terrier types will always fight back! You can imagine my reaction!
totally agree about breeders microchipping puppies before selling them, I've refused to sell my dogue de bordeaux pups to some prospective purchasers as i haven't liked the look of them! Bit cheeky but it's important!

My friend was exactly the same about her last two Ridgeback puppies, several people came, but they just didn't feel right about them, they eventually went to homes that they were happy with at 12 weeks old.
There was apparently a woman not far from where I live who had her dog stolen when she was walking it (think it was a Chi), they stopped the car, knocked her over and took the dog. One good thing about the larger breeds is it's a bit more difficult to just pick them up.

I'm living in hope that her microchip will one day be scanned and she will be returned to me! Microchips are a great invention if the person who finds your dog is willing to give them up! I'm guessing who ever has my dog wants to keep her and there isn't an obligation on vets to scan all dogs that come through their doors. Wish someone would invent a microchip tracker device - that would be priceless - i'd gladly save up and pay hundreds for one!

Definately agree with big dog's being harder to take! I was suprised my yorkie was taken - I have 2 Bordeauxs and at that time my rottie was still alive (RIP Xena). My Rottie was a lovely girl when it came to family and friends but had a total personality transplant when it came to strangers, and somehow they managed to get passed all 3 and get my lil one! We kept them locked away in the house for months after when we weren't around for fear they'd come back for them.

I will never have a small dog again, simply because i know that there are evil people out there who do not think about other people's feelings or the dog's. When i called the police they said it's just a dog regardless of how much she was worth - i'm sure if i told then £500 car had been taken it would have been a different story!

Let's hope this one is simply having the time of her life chasing rabbits etc and is returned to her owner ASAP!

There's this which I believe is the best at the moment, there's others out there but this one has a anti tamper collar

Hope you find your dog. Oz

These are expensive but are brilliant in that you can set a boudary into them and if the dog crosses the boundary a text alert will be sent to the phone. Think it was initally thought of for farm dogs and working gun dogs being taken out on a shoot, but we thought about one for a dog that kept doing a runner. You can just imagine, you get a text from the kids saying they'r staying out late and a text from the dog to say he'll be back in a bit!!!
Joking aside they would have probably helped alert you that the dog was being taken in your case.
I asked about the GPS tracking chip but was told it was an issue because it required a battery to actually work and given the size of a microchip the battery would need to be tiny and then you are left with battery lif not being long enough compared to a dogs life.
