How ridiculous is this country??

Out walking my dog, we get bombarded by a loose dog...no collar, no human...black and tan (maybe Rottie cross?) in a poorly lit area. Saw another dog but it vanished moments later.

So, what do you do?

We called the RSPCA - After the worlds longest list of options.."The RSPCA does not deal with stray dogs, pleasecontact your local dog warden"
Contact Directory Enquiries to get the dog warden's number - "Welcome to Mid Beds Council, we're sorry but the Office is now closed"
So, the Police, after all the dog is running loose on the road and could cause an accident... "Sorry, we don't pick up stray dogs...you can take it to the Luton kennels though"...

Yeah, I'm going to put an unknown dog in the back of my car, which does not have a dog guard and drive all to Luton....erm. No.

Spoke to the Vet..."well, If I'm honest with you...you're gonna be stuck with it for the weekend"

Not good. We have a very upset border collie (the stray kept jumping on him, he's the sensitive type) two terrified cats...and two cages of small rodents one flimsy door away from where we've current got it shut in!!

Have contacted Dog Lost but still....surely there must be some Governing body to deal with stray dogs outside of business hours???

The 2 nearest are closed, the nearest one with apparent dog facilities is Luton, 45 minutes away...we tried calling them, no answer.

Called the RSPCA again, they have concerns that the Police will refuse to take the dog (they had another caller before me who was worried because the Police kept saying it wasn't anything to do with them)

My Vet has agreed to scan her for a chip first thing tomorrow, if no chip, we'll have to drive to Luton and refuse to take no for an answer.

The police have an obligation, as lost property, to take in stray dogs, unfortunately they will not pick them up and leave it to the finder to take the dog to the nearest police station with kennel facilities. If you finish up taking the dog to Luton please put an ad in the local press as the owners might not know where to look for their dog. There could be any sort of reason why the dog was straying, you could also try asking your local radio station to broadcast the fact that you have found this dog, sometimes they oblige, sometimes not but it is worth a try. Usually it doesn't cost anything to put a found notice in the local newspaper. You are very kind taking him/her in, there are lots of people who would just have left the poor dog.

No, that's quite some distance from here

she's also registered on DogLost.co.uk now so any local volunteers will receive posters to print...will try and get one in the local shop/pub/paper.

It's really sad, she's such a sweet dog...she's absolutely terrified.

Can only assume the second dog was owned in the neighbourhood we found her, maybe the owners had just let it out the front to let have a wee before bed or something, or it can get in and out of it's garden...? Dog walkers we met hadn't seen it in either direction.

Turns out she's local to where we found her, she'd wriggled out their back garden and crossed into a neighbouring property which opened out into the area we were in. The problem with a dog loose there is that it's very near to that is the main road, a weir and wide open fields until you reach a dual carriageway...not good options.

The owners have just been to collect her! and it's an even happier ending as it's her owners birthday today!!
