Hello, im new on here and was just wondering if anyone has any ideas why my 16 year old mare totally freaks when a field of geldings move into the next field to one of ours. we rotate the fields so most of the time they arent there but if we overlap, she gets so stressed and upset, it happened yesterday and she was completely sweated up, blowing, snorting and desperately trying to get out of the gate back to her stable, i was in work and got a text as fortunately some girls brought her in and had to sponge her down, i had to ask the farmer if i could move fields myself and i will of course ask the other owners to let me know in future or only move at the allotted time but id love to know the reason why she does this, if it was that she was just interested in the boys she wouldnt want to get away from them, its like shes terrified. One of the geldings is a youngster and they are all full of themselves. Any ideas?

Mabe its nothing to do with the fact theyre geldings, and possibly she just doesnt cope to well with change ? Just the fact there is another herd where there wasnt one could be freaking her out a bit

thanks for that, but she's moved farms twice and other than being a bit unsettled for a week or so she's not reacted like this, it's very strange

Is she with other mares? If yes, is she the boss mare?

My mare is the boss mare and she "protects" her herd from the geldings in the next field. Once the geldings broke the fence and she was rearing up and snorting to keep them away from her herd.
