Well, I posted at the tail end of last week asking for peoples opinions on great danes. I had already done a great deal of research on the breed and wanted peoples opinions which were exactly what I had read - all good reports.

So, I collected my new puppy, Rosie on sunday morning! She was great for most of the day, very independent, playful and happy. We followed the breeders instructions to the letter re feeding so was surprised when she threw up her dinner. I fed her again later and again she was sick so I rang the breeder for advice. She felt I was perhaps giving her too much or pup was just a bit unsettled so as she was bright and happy, we decided to give her the next day to see how she got on.

Monday carried on in the same vein, throwing up her breakfast, then lunch and then retching and throwing up bile as her stomach was probably empty. I took her up to the vet who checked heart rate - fine, abdomen - normal, temp - normal etc etc and eventually came to the conclusion she must have picked up a bug. He gave her a jab to stop her being sick, said not to feed her for 12hrs and gave me some electrolytes to add to her water. She seemed to perk up a bit and just before bed did a poo that was very mucosey but settled down to sleep fine. She was up once for a pee during the night and seemed fine.

So, in the morning, I went into the kitchen to be met by a very happy little soul, full of beans and happy as larry! I let her out to pee and while she was outside, noticed a strange sausage shaped object in her bed. On closer inspection, I realised it was a sock!!! It said "Baby George at Asda" on it so I knew it hadn't come from my house as my daughter is now 5 and we haven't had baby socks for a long time. The breeder however, has a 1yr old daughter. Spoke to her on the phone and she said she remembered the pups playing with a sock they nicked out of the washing basket in the garden the day before I picked her up. She was so sorry and felt so guilty about it and has said she will pay my vets bill.

I'm just so grateful the wee toot is ok as I guess this could have had a very bad outcome. Needless to say, the little lady will be watched like a hawk from now on :)

Good of her to pay, quite right, really, given it happened at her house.

Puppies are such a worry! You do have to have eyes in the back of your head. Mine steal socks all the time, fortunately, they don't eat them!

Don't we get pictures? :(

You were very lucky she passed it safely.
My friends little Cairn died after a sock strangled her intestines :(.

Hope she is feeling tip top now and she is giving you the run around :D.

Glad she is okay, as CT says pups are a nightmare for chewing the wrong thing. I seem to spend all my time diving down Pickles throat, though didn't see him when he chewed the back off sons blackberry and charger from my mobile phone.
Its not just pups either, just got cat back after 2 days at vets after she puked up a large chunk of plastic, heaven knows why she ate it, she's 4 years old so not exactly a kitten. Thankfully she seems okay now.
Hope your girl behaves herself from now on, looking forward to seeing pictures (hint, hint).

Well done on getting your new pup and what a baptism of fire youve had, so glad your pup is ok now and it was only right and proper that the breeder paid the vet.

My friends working Springer had to have an op to remove part of a towel which was wrapped around his bowel the cost of that was £800, he has just had to have another after eating his bed this time costing £1,000, thankfully he is ok but a terrible worry

We do need photos its the law on AAD.

Photos as requested! Most of them of her sleeping just now as she does a lot of that :) Happily, she's perfectly fine now and is eating and drinking normally again and is full of beans. What a worry though, I can tell you!

aww she is stunning. Nanook has eaten salt (nearly killed him) a sponge, a dishcloth, a plastic bag, photos, and ice lolly in its wrapper! All things that were left where we thought they were out of reach- but he is one clever malamute- he can open doors and this was the problem- although the salt was from a salt grit bin box at the stables... I know the stress and worry you felt!

So cute!! Any very lucky! - I used to work at a vets and we used to get quite a few weird items needing to be removed from dogs guts - including a pair of silk lace knickers, socks, lego, numerous small childrens toys, stones, a pinecone, a bouncy ball with a smiley face on it - gave the vet a start when he opened up the intestines to find a face smiling back at him!!!:D
More pics needed!!!:D
