Hi
My live out native pony is on box rest due to a bout of laminitis and becomes very stressy from about 6 pm till after dark. Does anyone know if Naf Magic 5 star calmer is safe to give laminitics? Vet said use a magnesium based calmer, which this product is, but I'm nervous of anything that might cause probs!
Any advice would be most welcome
Thanks

magnesium is an excellent additive to feed laminitics -indeed many people believe that magnesium deficiency may be one of the triggers to laminitis!

Hi Elizabeth
Thanks for this - I had heard of this before, but wasn't certain. Unfortunately, I've tried to give him some this evening and he hates it :-( Just spat it out .... And I only put a little bit in. Very disappointing as I hoped it would keep him less stressed as well as giving him the magnesium.

Good to know I was on the right track - even if it hasn't worked out!

Thanks again
All best
Karla

Well try a different type of mag. Mag Ox powder is more palatable and can be added to his chaff/speedibeet.

Equine America's Magnitude is a very palatable form of magnesium.

If he's on box rest for laminitis can't your vet give you some Sedalin? It would have two benefits, firstly it helps the circulation hence why it's often given to laminitics even if they take box rest well & secondly it's a sedative so if you timed the dose right he should be a lot calmer between 6pm & dark.
