Ok, so Im literally riding the test in the morning & I have no idea how to ride this movement; how long do I give him to "stretch" in the stretch and retake in trot on a 20m circle? ie are we talking the whole 20m circle or just 3 or 4 strides whilst on the circle??? Please help very confused! (Im never doing novice 20 again

Apologies for my dumness & thanks for any replies in advance!

Isn't it just give and retake?! if so, you want your horse to stay in self carriage, and you need to give a clear 4 strides of give and retake.

Good luck!

Im really not sure, usually it uses the words "give and retake," which is what makes me wonder if it something different. Would be handy it is it, G&R is about the only novice movement we do well in!

when you get to venue tomorrow, watch a few tests and see how they do it if you feel confused. that's how i check any movements i am unsure of on the day - disorganised me!

I did this test a few weeks ago. I rode through it with my instructor earlier in the week. On her advice I allowed my horse to stretch forward into a longer and lower outline for about 2/3s of the circle. I didn't lengthen my reins like I would in the free walk, just widened my hands and allowed her to stretch forward. In my lesson I found it worked quite well but in the test I still got a remark that my horse could have stretched forwards more so I think I need to practice it more!
Don't know if this is any help! AJ

you give and retake the reins - as you would in canter when they ask forgive and retake of the reins.

You allow your hands slightly forwards (about 3 plaits forwards) for about 2 strides then take back the contact again. The horse should remain in a nice soft outline and not snatch at the contact - its to show that the horse is in self carriage and is soft through its neck.

i rode the test a couple of weeks ago & got a 7 for this movement , i allowed my horse to stretch for about half of the circle so can't have got it too wrong!

Too late for Jemayni, but to clarify for others as there is clearly confusion over this - the clue is in the wording of Movement 13.

The requirement is "Circle right 20 metres diameter and allow the horse to stretch".

Iit is most definitely not a "give and retake" - which would be described as such if that was what was required.

ann-jen has the closest answer, but the reins should also be allowed to lengthen slightly, but keeping the horse still on a contact. If the rein is not allowed to lengthen, the horse can only stretch down and under, whereas what is required is for the horse to stretch down and forward.

Thanks for that - after riding the test - it seemed to make more sense to lengthen the rein a little - so that is what I will do next time I ride Novice 20

novice 20 is a stretch movement so I would have thought that you allow the horse to stretch down in trot as if you are working long and low, maintaining a contact, the horse is not rushing and not falling on to its forehand and rounding over the back
