The filthy string girth needs washing but it's not mine so I don't want to ruin it by putting it in the machine, not sure hand washing will do much though as it really is grubby! So is it safe to machine was it?

Quick answers on a postcard please as I am about to do a 'horsey Wash'!

I always used to put them in the machine, but we are talking nearly 40 years ago now!

if it's one of the new Stubben ones -NO - saddler told me they had to be hand washed. I find if you soak it for a while dirt comes out easily.

Well we will see, I couldn't get back on here to see your replies so I stuck it in the wash on a 30 degree delicate wash  Fingers crossed the girth will survive!!

I wash all my stubben ones in the washing machine, about 40deg with non bio on a quick wash, then just hang to dry ... I did buy one 2nd hand that I think has been tumbled as its super-fluffy!

I am on my 6th Stubben girth. I love them.

Why 6....? Because every now and then, when you put them in the washing machine, they shrink dramatically. I think it is to do with the heat / length of wash. I even tried buying an extra long one and trying to shrink it, but no, nothing until one day I accidentally washed it twice in a row on a long 40 degree wash and it shrank by about 6 inches. Be warned! But other than that they are great and 6 over 3 years works out pretty cheap. Plus I now have a good stock of girths if I ever downsize back to ponies.
