Which guesstimate of horses grown up height has been most accurate for you? With examples please!
a) string test - elbow to ergot and then swinging the ergot end of the string up while keeping the elbow end still on the elbow
b) measuring knee to coronet band in inches (1 inch=1 hand)

A. Have done it with newborns onward and has been amazingly accurate in 99% of cases.

Ergot to elbow doubled and has always worked out to be within an inch at most of the result. I did one that came to 18 hands as a two year old; six years later he was over 17.3 - and his dam was only 15.1!!

Yep, same happened with me. Ergot to elbow then doubled. I got 16.3. Thought "No way!" since it was a first foal (and a small weak one at that, with a dam who wasn't a good mother and had little milk) out of a 15.1 TB mare and stallion was 16.0. But at age 5, mine's definitely over 16.2. Maybe 16.3 now. Will have to remeasure soon to see :)

like the others have said the string test has always proved to be 99.9% accurate in my experience.

and while we are thinking about this sort of thing ....

It takes 7 seconds for food to pass from mouth to stomach.
A human hair can hold 3 kg.
The length of the penis is three times the length of the thumb.
The femur is hard as concrete.
A woman's heart beats faster than the man.
Women blink twice as much as men.
We use 300 muscles just to hold our balance when we stand.
The woman has read this entire text.
The man is still looking at his thumb.

:D:D:D

Vanner- very funny! Although the heart beat one is quite good for sex of babies a girls heart will beat much faster than a boys so if when your listening to heart beat you can take a good guess which sex baby will be.

Glad it made you smile!

Anytime, as they grow the gap from end of the string and the withers will become less, until when they have finished growing it should actually be the same! if you try it on a fully grown horse you'll find it is an equal lenght from ergot to elbow and elbow to wither!! Or at least that is how I understand it anyway .....

I have done both tests on my youngster and apparently I'm going to end up with a 15.2

Not sure if it is going to be accurate though as she is now 4 and still around 14.1 so if she's going to make 15.2 she best get her skates on :p Will be fab if she does though :D

Yes, that is correct.

Pants!

Well in the nicest possible way, I hope you are wrong!

I want my lovely T to get bigger than 14hh as I am 5'9" and in every other way he is perfect for me - a really lovely character. Obviously haven't tried him under saddle yet, being as he is only 8 months, but that is a minor issue :)
